 Livorno booked their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Cup as they emerged victorious from a winner-takes-all battle with Auxerre at the Stade de l'Abbe-Deschamps.
Cristiano Lucarelli's 59th-minute goal was all that separated the teams as both battled for a place in the next round of the competition. Neither side was assured of a place in the next round at kick-off, but Auxerre had the advantage, knowing a draw would be enough to see them finish third behind Rangers and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Group A. But the hosts seemed to have their hearts set on victory as they pushed forward in the early stages. Auxerre sought the equaliser they needed to stay in the competition, but Daniel Niculae's header was straight at Amelia. They had one more chance deep in injury time, but Benoit Pedretti's corner was cleared by Rahman Rezaei to ensure that it was the Italians who will have their name in Friday's draw. A brace from David Lopez Moreno and a further goal from substitute Juanfran gave Osasuna the point they needed and more. With Parma already through as group winners, they fielded a weakened side and Osasuna sought to take full advantage as they came bursting out of the blocks with Valmiro Valdo firing narrowly wide in the second minute. La squadra di Arrigoni doveva vincere per passare il turno ed entrare nei sedicesimi di finale. L'impresa è arrivata con un gol (eccezionale) dell'uomo simbolo dei toscani, Cristiano Lucarelli. E' passata un'ora: angolo dalla sinistra di Passoni, il capitano stacca di testa e insacca alle spalle del francese Cool. Il Parma che inseguiva la sesta vittoria consecutiva, tra campionato e Coppa, in Uefa trova un inatteso stop casalingo contro gli spagnoli dell'Osasuna (0-3). Pioli, come sempre in Europa, sceglie il turnover e pesca con abbondanza fra le riserve. Ma stavolta il risultato non è lo stesso, grazie anche a una condotta spagnola ordinata ed attenta. L'Osasuna, reduce da tre vittorie di fila in campionato, conferma di attraversare un buon momento, ma soprattutto di avere più fame del Parma: e infatti la sua qualificazione ai sedicesimi di Uefa è arrivata grazie ai tre punti del Tardini.
