Uefa Cup: Braga spoil Ranieri's party in Portugal (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Friday, 16 February 2007
Parma - Giuseppe RossiSilva ze Carlos' scored the only goal of the game late on to put Braga in the driving seat in their UEFA Cup tie with Parma. The Serie A strugglers looked to have given themselves a great chance of qualifying for the last 16 after holding Braga to a stalemate for 81 minutes in Portugal, but Ze Carlos's strike means they need to score at least once in the return leg next week.

Parma were pegged back for most of the game as Rogerio Goncalves' men peppered their goal before eventually grabbing a deserved winner.

Paulo Jorge Soares had the game's first chance in the 10th minute, meeting Manuel Joao Pinto's corner with a right-footed volley which sailed over the crossbar.

Luca Cigarini's drilled 34th-minute effort was punched away by Jorge Paulo Santos, and from the resultant corner, Matteo Contini swung the ball in and Cigarini again shot, this time firing wide.

Just before half-time Braga re-found their shooting boots as Joao Pinto drilled a fantastic shot from outside the area which went narrowly over.

The hosts began the second period as they had ended the first and after just two minutes Ze Carlos signalled his intent, drilling a shot wide of the right post.

Two minutes after that Carlos Cesinha's right-footed effort was parried round the post by Luca Bucci before Alexandre Bruno Gama and Alberto Ricardo Chaves fired in two shots in two minutes as Braga increased the pressure.

Daniele Paponi came on for Parma just after the hour mark and had an immediate impact, picking up a booking and then firing a shot wide within five minutes of stepping onto the field.

That was Parma's first real effort of the half, and though Zlatan Muslimovic had another in the 77th minute, Braga took the lead shortly after.

Ze Carlos received the ball 12 yards out and let fly a right-footed shot which beat Luca Bucci and nestled into the bottom corner of the net.

Daniele Dessena had a great chance to grab a vital away goal with five minutes left, but saw his brilliant curling shot go wide. ESPN
