Australia has gone down to France 24-10 in its second pool match at the IRB Women's World Cup in Canada.
France opened with two tries in the first 15 minutes on its way to a 17-0 half-time lead, and while the Wallyroos outscored their opponents in the second half, it wasn't enough to get the win.
Wing Catherine Devillers opened the scoring for the French, crossing for a try after just six minutes, with captain Estelle Sartini slotting the conversion.
Just 60 seconds later Australia was reduced to 14 players when Paige Butcher was shown a yellow card, and France made them pay, Delphine Plantet crossing for an unconverted try.
With just one minute left in the half Devillers crossed for her second, and while Sartini missed the conversion, the French had a healthy 17-point buffer.
After 57 minutes, the Wallyroos finally got on the board when fullback Tobie McGann struck home a penalty, but France answered, Dalila Bouberma getting over for a try, which Sartini dutifully converted.
Kim Wilson was subbed on for Paige midway through the half and the change paid almost immediate dividends, the substitute getting over for Australia's first try of the match.
McGann made no mistake with the extras, but it mattered little in the end as France held on for the win.
