Super 14 Rugby: Reds, Tahs and Brumbies all win Print E-mail
Sunday, 04 February 2007
The Queensland Reds have ended a five-match losing sequence against the Hurricanes in emphatic style with a deserved 25-16 victory in the first round of the 2007 Super 14 at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane on Saturday night.

Although the match saw few try-scoring chances in slippery humid conditions, Reds flanker Mitch Chapman did cross the line in the 26th minute when he outjumped 'Canes winger Hosea Gear following a pinpoint cross-field kick from Berrick Barnes.

Lively debutant Clinton Schifcofske added the conversion plus five penalties from seven attempts on his maiden Super 14 appearance to score 17 of Queensland's haul.

The Waratahs have started their 2007 Super 14 campaign with a strong 25-16 win over the Lions at Ellis Park, Johannesburg on Saturday morning.

The Waratahs displayed more experience and maturity than their opponents scoring three tries to one to overpower a gallant Lions outfit that was stung by the loss of flyhalf and skipper Andre Pretorius just before the game.

The Australian outfit scored two first half tries through Daniel Halangahu and man-of-the-match Rocky Elsom to lead 15-6 at the break and secured the deserved victory 12 minutes from full-time when reserve hooker Adam Freier crashed over for a five-pointer out wide.

The Brumbies have got their 2007 Super 14 campaign off to a winning start with a gruelling 21-15 victory over the Chiefs at Hamilton's Waikato Stadium.

Squaring off before a parochial Chiefs crowd in summery conditions, the Brumbies twice winners of the competition, looked in sound form as they asserted early pressure on their hosts.
