A huge defensive effort has handed the Brumbies a tight 6-3 win over the Queensland Reds in a scrappy Super 14 match at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday night.
In the lowest scoring match in Super Rugby history, the Brumbies, led by a huge effort from No.8 Stephen Holies and ever-present flanker George Smith, managed to repel the Reds attack and hold on for their ninth straight win over the Queenslanders.
After first-half penalty goals from Brumbies skipper Stirling Mortlock and Reds fullback Clinton Schifcofske, former Queensland utility Julian Huxley converted the winning penalty against his former employers in the 72nd minute.
His match-winning kick resulted from a dangerous 'coat-hanger' tackle by Reds bulldozing centre Lloyd Johansson on Mortlock, with a groggy Brumbies captain, who has just returned to rugby following a head knock a fortnight ago, having to be helped from the field. Brumbies 6 Penalties: Mortlock, Huxley
Reds 3 Penalties: Schifcofske The Waratahs came back from a 16-point deficit only to be beaten 30-26 by the Cheetahs in an entertaining Super 14 match in Kimberley, South Africa.
Played in blistering temperatures, the Cheetahs went out to a 19-3 lead via three tries after just 18 minutes before the Waratahs staged a spirited comeback on the back of some magic by dynamic young flyhalf Kurtley Beale. Cheetahs 30 Tries: Cooke, Burger, Fredericks, Smith Conversions: Bosman 2 Penalties: Bosman Drop goal: Kruger
Waratahs 26 Tries: Beale, Jacobs Conversions: Hewat 2 Penalties: Hewat 4 Sportal
