Australia has gone winless on the final day of the Dubai Sevens as South Africa took out the opening tournament of the season.
South Africa defeated New Zealand 31-12 in the final, coming from 12-0 down at half-time.
Earlier in the day, Australia had lost its quarter-final 21-5 to last year's Dubai champion England, with Brett Stapleton getting Australia's only try to open the scoring.
David Strettle scored twice for England before Ben Gollings wrapped up an England win.
Australia was then relegated to the secondary Plate competition, but lost the semi-final 12-5 to Samoa, despite again taking an early lead after a James Lew try.
Two Alatasi Tupou tries were enough to give Samoa victory.
Australia coach Glen Ella said he was satisfied with the performances of his makeshift squad, after a pay dispute saw 19 players stay at home.
"The players have a great attitude and really want to test themselves against the best teams in the competition and I think they have done well, considering there were eleven players on debut this weekend," Ella said.
South Africa had earlier knocked Samoa out of contention with a 19-10 victory in a quarter-final, inspired by player of the tournament Stefan Basson.
He then led South Africa to a 19-0 semi-final win against England, before scoring the last try of the final to secure the tournament victory.
South Africa will hope to repeat its feat in front of a home crowd when the IRB Sevens tour moves to George on December 8 and 9.
