 A late try by flanker Mauro Bergamasco gave Italy an historic 23-20 Six Nations win over Wales at Rome's Stadio Flamino on Saturday.
The flanker went over the line in the 78th minute to give Italy their second win in this season's competition, the first time they have won two Six Nations matches in the same season since joining in 2000. The game ended in a controversy after Wales were awarded a penalty in the final seconds. After checking how much time was left, centre James Hook opted to kick for a lineout instead of going for a goal that would have secured a draw. Wales were then incensed when referee Chris White blew to end the game. Italy had led 13-7 at halftime thanks to a Kaine Robertson try and eight points from the boot of flyhalf Ramiro Pez. Wales hit back to go ahead early in the second half after a Matthew Rees try, but could not resist Italy's late pressure as they followed up their 37-17 victory over Scotland in the last round. Pumped up after that Murrayfield win -- their first away in the competition -- Italy started aggressively. Winger Matteo Pratichetti went over the line in the third minute but the try was disallowed for a forward pass. Pez missed a long-range penalty, but made up for his mistake by kicking two penalties to put Italy 6-0 up by the middle of the first half. A Pez penalty closed the gap to 20-16 with eight minutes to go. Two minutes later the Argentine-born flyhalf passed up the chance at another penalty to kick for a line-out as Italy went for the win. Italy drove the ball to within a metre of the Welsh line. Having watched his forwards fail to break through, Pez hoisted up a delicate chip that bounced loose for Bergamasco to get the winning try. L'Italia, avanti alla fine del primo tempo, ha recuperato molto bene dalla meta di S. Williams, frutto di un clamoroso errore difensivo. Nella ripresa altro errore collettivo dei difensori, Rees sfugge a Nieto e segna in mezzo ai pali. ASSEDIO - Gran finale dell'Italia che per 3' schiaccia i gallesi a un metro dalla linea. Troncon ha l'idea giusta: palla a Pez che scavalca la difesa e segna. All'ultimo secondo, il Galles cerca la punizione, l'ottiene su tenuto di Staibano al limite dei ventidue. Hook non calcia nei pali, sarebbe stato il pareggi, ma cerca la touche. E' l'80', White fischia. Gallesi a casa, azzurri nel trionfo del Flaminio. E fra sette giorni arriva l'Irlanda.
