Six Nations Rugby: Italy downed by Wilkinson (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Sunday, 11 February 2007
Josh Sole takes on Johnny WilkinsonIt ended with a try each but an accurate kicking game from Jonny Wilkinson has guided England to a hard-fought 20-7 win over Italy in the second round of the Six Nations in front of 82,000 fans in London.

Despite attacking for most of the opening stanza, England was unable to put its underdog opponent to the sword.

However, on the back of three Wilkinson penalties and after Robinson finally crossed just before half-time, the hosts were able to take a commanding 14-0 lead into the break.

The host's solitary try came when Marco Bortolami was sin-binned for a professional foul right on half-time. Sensing the opportunity, England sent the ball wide to Robinson who dived over with relative ease to score.

This proved to be the most exciting moment of an otherwise monotonous contest and in similar circumstances to the opening half, England again struggled to capitalise on a spate of attacking chances early in the second.

A further penalty, courtesy of Wilkinson's famous boot, put the world champions further ahead but Italy finally began to mount an attack late in the contest.

And with less than 20 minutes remaining in the match, first five-eighths Andrea Scanavacca gave the visitors something to cheer about after touching down under the posts on the back of a sizzling piece of play from Josh Sole.

Converting his own try, Scanavacca had Italy back in the contest, albeit momentarily, until Wilkinson, making just his second appearance for England since 2003, slotted over another penalty to put the result beyond doubt. Sportal
