Rugby: Italy destroy Canada in Fontanafredda (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Sunday, 26 November 2006
Italy - CanadaAlthough Italy fielded a second string line up the 12th-ranked Italians defeated No. 13 Canada 41-6, running roughshod over the Canadians with a dominant second half.

The Canadians, coming off a 61-26 loss to No. 9 Wales last week, got two penalties from fly half Ander Monro in jumping out to a 6-0 lead and trailed just 13-6 at halftime. Italy then opened the second half with four tries in the first 20 minutes, and the Canadians never recovered.

"We were expecting a real tough game from Italy," said Canadian coach Ric Suggitt. "They are one of the most improved teams in the world. They're big, they're skilled. Our guys, they played pretty well for the first half and then wear and tear caught up to us, and we were playing defence for far too many long stretches."

Winger Marko Stanojevic scored two tries to lead Italy in front of the capacity crowd of 6,000 at Fontanafredda Stadium, about 100 kilometres north of Venice.

Replacement forwards Alessandro Zanni and Martin Castrogiovanni and captain Marco Bortolami also scored for the Azzurri. Fullback David Bortolussi kicked five conversions and two penalties.

Canada was reduced to 14 men when prop Forrest Gainer was sent to the sin bin in the 40th minute for illegally slowing down the ball at the breakdown.

"That put a lot of pressure on us," Suggitt said of Gainer's 10-minute penalty. "Then our defence bent a little bit too much in the second half and the Italians started to run away with it.

"After that the Italians kept 80 per cent of the possession of the ball and put us under immense pressure."

The Italians used their size advantage to dominate the scrums and the difference in size and strength took its toll on the Canadian side that made errors and missed tackles at critical times.

Stanojevic sparked Italy's second-half scoring burst running in a try in the 42nd. Zanni scored his first try for Italy in the 52nd, just seconds after coming off the bench. Five minutes later, Stanojevic crossed for his second try in the corner after some quick passes. Castrogiovanni, who replaced loosehead prop Andrea Lo Cicero, drove over from close range to score in the 62nd minute.

"Full respect to Canada," said Stanojevic. "They were very physical and gave us a good game today. But we're very happy with the result. We competed right to the end, which was important."

Italy defeated Canada 51-6 the previous times these two teams met, in L'Aquila in 2004.

Bortolussi è preciso e all’intervallo il tabellone dice 13-6.
