Serie B: Juventus lose, Napoli into second place (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Monday, 04 June 2007

Piacenza's Rantieri celebrates his goal against Vicenza in Serie B - AusItalia.comItaly's Serie B is set for a nail-biting last round finish next weekend as Napoli won at home, Genoa lost in Mantova and Piacenza was able to snatch a victory in Vicenza.

The big winners in the penultimate round of Serie B for the 2006/07 season were Napoli, who leaped Genoa into second place, and Piacenza, who closed the gap on the top three to just 10 points.

Calaio scored what proved to be the winner for Napoli as the partenopei defeated Lecce at the San Paolo in front of 60,000 spectators.

AusItalia Music - "San Remo 2007" - IMPORT - Italian - Double CD - $53AudThe win moved Napoli into second place, one point above Genoa, who seemed to be cruising to a nil all draw in Mantova until Tarana scored a late winner for the Mantovani in the 94th minute to shock the top of the Serie B table with just one round left.

Genoa slips into the potential play-off zone. The Genovese club lies 10 points clear of fourth placed Piacenza, who won 2-1 in Vicenza, with one round left.

Serie B's rules state that should the third placed team, who usually must play off with the fourth, fifth and sixth placed clubs for Serie A promotion, finish 10 points or more clear of fourth place then they avoid the play-offs and is automatically promoted.

Genoa are at home to Napoli in the last round next week and a draw or loss for the Genovese will surely mean a play-off should Piacenza win.

Piacenza will host Triestina in the last round and other play-off contenders such as Rimini, Mantova, Brescia and Bologna will be hoping that Piacenza win.

Arezzo, Spezia, Verona and Modena are all in danger of relegation going into the last round. Arezzo are away to Treviso, Modena host Frosinone, Verona host Bari and Spezia are away to Juventus.

In Bari, Davide Carrus scored in the 57th minute, beating Juventus' reserve goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.

Juventus' regular goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and captain Alessandro Del Piero were away for national team play.

In the 87th, Mirante saved a penalty by Massimo Ganci after Nicola Legrottaglie was sent off for a last-man foul.
