Juventus against Napoli. The two fallen giants of Italian football are now at the top of the Serie B standings and battling it out for promotion. It was only last year that Juve was on top of Serie A and Napoli led Serie C. It was destiny that these two former Italian Serie A champions would continue the re-birth of football in the land of the current World Champion. In possibly the most defining match of the season, who will score the valuable competition points to set up its resurgence into the bigtime of Serie A. Juventus had nine points deducted at the beginning of the season after being relegated from Serie A after being found guilty of referee-fixing over the past few seasons. Napoli has only played one season in Serie A in the past nine years, spending six of them in Serie B and two in Serie C.
Napoli, after winning Serie in 1987 and 1990, were then the target of a news story which declared its players were taking illicit drugs. Enter the Maradona-Carnevale cocaine show and Napoli lost two of its most attacking players for 18 months. Since then its best finish in Serie A was 4th place in 1992. By 1996 Napoli had lost all its Scudetto-winning players, sold for low prices or retired, and the clubs cash flow suddenly became suspiciously non-existent. In 1998 the club only won two Serie A games and was relegated to Serie B. The past nine seasons has seen Napoli back in Serie A and then straight back down in B, then relegated to Serie C thanks to failing to pay the Serie B season registration fee in 2004, and winning promotion back to Serie B in 2006. Juventus, after many poor Serie A seasons, resurged back into the Serie A spotlight at the same time as Napoli's demise, claiming its first domestic title since 1986 in 1995 thanks to a memorable Roberto Baggio season.
And here we have it - Serie B's Superclassico, Juventus vs Napoli - 17.30 kick off, April 10 at Stadio Olimpico, Torino, Italy. Juventus boast a star-studded squad, Napoli has a hard working lower profile line-up. The difference on the Serie B ladder is six points, with Juventus leading with 59 points over Napoli on 53. Juventus have three of Italy's FIFA World Championship winning players with Del Piero, Camoranesi and Buffon, and fellow World Cup finalists, Frenchmen Trezeguet and Boumsong, in the starting line-up. There is no shortage of class and their are no excuses should the bianconeri lose this match. An expected Juventus 4-4-2 line up is Buffon in goals. Leading the defence will be Boumsong and former Italy international Chiellini, with Balzaretti on the left and Zebina on the right. Paro and Giannichedda will control the midfield with Nedved and Camoranesi on the flanks. Del Piero and Trezeguet should start in attack with Palladino expected to play his part off the bench. Napoli are expected to field a more attacking 3-5-2 formation.
Juventus coach Didier Deschamps has already stated that he will be happy with a draw to keep Napoli six points away. Napoli however need the win to overtake Genoa (55 points) and break away from a closely trailing pack including Mantova (51 points), Bologna, Piacenza and Rimini (all on 50 points). After 32 games, Napoli would be happy to be in this position, especially after just being promoted from a much weaker Serie C1. Juventus is also happy to be in first place. If it was forced to accept the initial 30 point deduction instead of just 9 points, it would find itself level with Frosinone on 38 points and in equal 12th position with little hope of promotion. Recent form suggests parity in Torino. Juventus have a home advantage and the stadium should be packed. Napoli has had a quiet month, losing away to Crotone 2-1, drawing at home 1-1 with Bari and 0-0 with Vicenza but surprising many after winning away against Bologna 3-2 on Friday. Juventus, after losing to Brescia 3-1, have defeated Treviso 1-0, Triestina 5-1, Pescara 1-0 but stumbled in its 1-1 draw on Friday at home against Albinoleffe. With nine Serie B games remaining before the play-offs, this Superclassico is crucial in the outcome of who will win Serie B and who will finish second, guaranteeing direct promotion into Serie A. Genoa seem to be the main challengers to Juve and Napoli, but Bologna could present an obstacle. Juventus, in its final nine games, will play at home against fellow Serie A promotion contenders Genoa, Mantova, Bologna and also Spezia, and will play away in Lecce, Verona, Cesena, Arezzo and Bari. Napoli still have some very tough home games against Pescara, Cesena, Modena and Lecce, and they will play away games against Frosinone, Mantova, Brescia, Verona and finally Genoa in the last round which could decide who will go directly into Serie A. There are no easy games in Serie B. The standard, thanks to the fallen giants, is significantly higher than most other big leagues around the world. Can Napoli pull off a fairy tale promotion to the top flight? Surely Juventus' home games against Bologna, Mantova and Genoa will influence the outcome. Their respective falls from grace were probably more to do with poor club management than any other aspect.
After winning the Serie A in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2003, Juve went on to win the 2005 and 2006 titles but were stripped of them after being found guilty of match-fixing and were sentenced to play in Italy's Serie B with a nine point deduction.
Former Cagliari 'keeper Iezzo will be in the goals, with Paolo Cannavaro, Maldonado and Domizzi in defence. Former Chelsea and AC Milan man Sam Dalla Bona will lead the midfield alongside Savini, Grava and Gatti with Uruguayan Bogliacino playing just behind the strike-duo of Calaio' and former Boca Juniors and Udinese striker Roberto Sosa. De Zerbi is suspended so expect Bucchi, Rullo, Amodio or Pia' to come off the bench.
he playoffs for teams finishing third to seventh will be breath taking. Serie B now has a Superclassico, but for how much longer?
