Serie A: Juventus beat Inter, Roma edges closer Print E-mail
Monday, 24 March 2008

Sample ImageAn Alessandro Del Piero-inspired Juventus have ended Inter Milan's unbeaten home record and thrown the Serie A title race wide open.

After a goalless first half, Mauro Camoranesi put the visitors ahead in the 49th minute before a fine assist from Del Piero set up David Trezeguet to volley in Juve's second in the 63rd minute.

Del Piero, who was left out of Roberto Donadoni's Italy squad for the upcoming friendly in Spain, had chances to add a third, and it was a nervous end for the Bianconeri when Maniche grabbed a consolation six minutes from time before hitting the post in stoppage-time.

But Inter could not find an equaliser, leaving the Scudetto up for grabs after Roma beat Empoli 2-1 to move within four points of the leaders with eight games to go.

Roma were made to work for their victory against a side battling to escape the bottom three.

Max Tonetto put the Eternal City giants ahead after 36 minutes, but Sebastian Giovinco replied for the visitors five minutes after the break.

Simone Perrotta saw red seven minutes minutes later, but Roma made light of the numerical disadvantage to claim a winner through Christian Panucci three minutes after the hour-mark.

Fiorentina saw off 10-man Lazio 1-0 to maintain their four-point cushion in the final UEFA Champions League spot.

Giampaolo Pazzini scored the only goal of the game 13 minutes from time against the Biancoceleste, who had to play 52 minutes a man down after Massimo Mutarelli saw red seven minutes before half-time.

Four points back are AC Milan, who claimed a 1-0 win at Torino thanks to Alexandre Pato.

The teenager, who is poised to make his senior Brazil debut against Sweden in midweek, found the back of the net after 68 minutes.

Sampdoria slipped of the pace in the hunt for European football, but it could have been worse as they salvaged a 1-1 draw against basement boys Cagliari.

Three points would have taken the Sardinians off the bottom of the table and they came agonisingly close with Pasquale Foggia's 41st-minute goal the difference between the two sides until the final minute of the game.

Daniele Franceschini struck to earn Samp a point, but it was not enough to prevent Udinese climbing above them into sixth with a 2-0 win over Livorno.

Fabio Quagliarella, restored to the side after being dropped to the bench for a 1-0 win over Toro in midweek, opened the scoring after 19 minutes, with Antonio Di Natale doubling up two minutes after the break.

Genoa claimed claimed a 3-2 win at Palermo, despite two goals from striker Amauri.

The Brazilian opened the scoring from the spot after 24 minutes, but goals from Lucho Figueroa (30), Omar Milanetto (50) and Abdoulay Konko (61) turned things around.

Amauri grabbed a second in stoppage-time, but to no avail.

Elsewhere, Atalanta and Catania played out a 0-0 draw, while Reggina drew 1-1 with Napoli.

Roberto Sosa looked to have stolen the points for Napoli with his 75th-minute strike, but Franco Brienza equalised in the dying seconds.

A last-gasp double from Massimo Maccarone gave Siena a 2-0 win over Parma.

The game was drifting towards a 0-0 draw until Maccarone struck in the 88th and 90th minutes - the first from the spot - to condemn Hector Cuper to his first defeat as Parma coach.
