Casey Stoner comfortably won the San Marino round of the World Moto GP championship leading throughout at Misano to move closer to his first elite crown.

The Ducati rider provided the cheer for the Italian crowd as he became the first rider in over three decades, since the days of Giacomo Agostini, to win three consecutives races on a European-built bike.

It was the eighth victory of a dominant campaign for the 21-year-old Australian and one that puts him 85 points clear of his nearest rival Valentino Rossi, whose hopes of reviving his fading challenge to regain the crown he has held five times ended with a broken engine in the early stages of the race.

With Rossi out of the way, and the current title-holder Nicky Hayden playing catch-up at the back of the pack, having been forced wide and through the gravel on the opening lap as Randy de Puniet crashed out, taking Dani Pedrosa with him, it was left to the Rizla Suzuki duo of Chris Vermeulen and John Hopkins to take the fight to Stoner.

There was never any doubt, though, that the race belonged to Stoner, who came close to matching the lap time that had earned him a fifth pole start at this revised circuit, hosting a MotoGP race for the first time in 14 years, as he set the fastest lap of the race to take the victory by some four seconds.

"The team is doing everything right for me. I wanted to win races, enjoy them, and now to win three on the run is awesome," reflected Stoner. "We had a bit of struggle with set-up, but we thought about it long and hard to get it sorted."

With five races remaining, Stoner is well placed to match, or better, the record of 11 victories in a season held by his compatriot Michael Doohan, but first he must win the title and that could be secured at his home Philip Island early next month.

Non lo dice, ma ormai sa anche lui che il Mondiale è praticamente nelle sue mani. Casey Stoner ha dominato anche a Misano e ora con 85 punti di vantaggio su Rossi la strada è come minimo in discesa. Mancano cinque gare alla fine della stagione, gli basterà non fare errori e il gioco sarà fatto. Ma con una Ducati del genere si sta facendo pura teoria.

CONCENTRATO - Casey comunque mantiene come al solito il profilo basso. "Il titolo lo vedevo già vicino prima di Misano, ma sono arrivato qui con un po' di preoccupazione perché come diceva Mick Doohan prima bisogna vincere le gare e poi di conseguenza arriva il titolo - dice l'australiano - nei primi giorni di prove ho avuto un po' di problemi di messa a punto e quindi per tutta la notte la squadra ha lavorato per risolverli, positivamente, e così oggi ho potuto resistere agli attacchi delle Suzuki di Hopkins, prima, e di Vermeulen poi". E ora? "Adesso bisogna stare concentrati perché mancano ancora cinque gare. Se non succederà niente il titolo mondiale arriverà prima della fine, ma adesso resto concentrato".
