 Italian Valentino Rossi won the Portuguese Grand Prix for Yamaha on Sunday to keep championship leader Casey Stoner waiting for the MotoGP title.
The Australian needed to score 15 points more than Rossi to secure the crown with four races in hand but the Ducati rider had to settle for third place behind the Italian and Spain's Dani Pedrosa. Stoner now has 287 points, 76 more than Rossi. "It was an amazing race. It was a great battle with Dani (Pedrosa) especially, and with Casey (Stoner). Today everything worked well", said the jubilant Rossi, who retired from the previous race in Italy. "Once again we've shown that when the tyres are working well we can fight at the top," added the former champion. "It was fantastic fun to ride like this again, at the maximum and with a lot of good passing." Rossi, using a new specification Yamaha engine, overtook Honda's Pedrosa on the final lap to win in 45 minutes 49.911 seconds at the slowest circuit on the calendar. Pedrosa clocked 45:50.086 with Ducati rider Stoner third on 45:51.388. Outgoing world champion Nicky Hayden of the United States, who started on pole position, was fourth on a Honda on 46:02.862.  In Italian: Valentino è tornato grandeLa Yamaha di Rossi chiude in testa all'Estoril davanti a Pedrosa e Stoner. Non succedeva dal 30 giugno, ad Assen. Brutta partenza del "Dottore", che dalla quinta posizione sorpassa tutti per poi lottare fino al penultimo giro. Mondiale: il ritardo ridotto a 76 punti. Rossi c'è. Non vinceva da Assen, dal 30 giugno, ma all'Estoril dà spettacolo. La Yamaha parte male, rimonta, asseconda la strategia, chiude in testa. Al 2° posto Pedrosa, un vero ossoduro, 3° e soddisfatto Stoner (che voglia festeggiare in Australia, a casa sua?). Hayden è 4° e staccato, Melandri 5°, Hopkins 6°. RABBIA VALENTINO - Quello che la Yahama perde in potenza da Ducati e Honda, Rossi lo compensa con il carattere. All'Estoril è uno spettacolo vederlo partire dalla terza posizione, scivolare in quinta per poi recuperare giro dopo giro fino alla testa della corsa. Il primo a farne le spese è Melandri, che poi farà fatica a tenere il passo dei primi. Al 3° posto c'è Hayden: il sorpasso è in staccata e lo statunitense non può far altro che allargare. Intanto davanti Pedrosa passa Stoner che finisce subito nel mirino di Rossi: il sorpasso è ai meno 20, strano ma vero in fondo al rettilineo. Stessa sorte, al giro successivo, tocca a Pedrosa. Il "Dottore" è in testa, ma non è finita. FINALE DA BRIVIDO - Ai meno 13 in fondo al rettilineo ripassa Pedrosa. Rossi resta in scia, Stoner (3°) e Hayden (4°) mollano metri decisivi. Ai meno 5 dal termine Pedrosa va largo e Rossi non può far altro che passare. Ma Vale restituisce il favore, nessuno vuol stare davanti, e quindi Pedrosa torna a condurre. E' un elastico continuo fino al penultimo giro: Rossi ci prova in fondo al rettilineo ma va lungo in staccata. Erroraccio, rimediato prima del cavatappi con un sorpasso perfetto. Inizia l'ultimo giro ma chi è dietro non ha spazio per rimontare. Rossi c'è, di nuovo. OMAGGIO A MCRAE - Prima della gara, Valentino Rossi ha voluto fare un omaggio a Colin McRae, l'ex campione del Mondo di rally morto in un incidente con il proprio elicottero. Poco prima del via della MotoGP all'Estoril, il pilota della Yamaha ha mostrato alle telecamere un cartello con la scritta "Colin ci mancherai". Rossi era un grande fan di McRae. E per questo, alla fine, gli ha dedicato la vittoria di oggi. Classifica
