Valentino Rossi wins pole in Turkish GPValentino Rossi is well placed to extend his World Championship lead after winning pole position for Sunday's Turkish MotoGP.

The Italian was in fine form, maneuvering his Yamaha around the track in perfect conditions, to post the fastest lap time of one minute, 52.795 seconds.

The Turkish track is one of very few tracks on the MotoGP circuit that Rossi is yet to taste success at, and the popular 28-year-old is well placed to reverse that statistic.

Rossi's team-mate Colin Edwards made it a Yamaha one-two by qualifying second fastest, just 0.149 seconds behind the seven-time World Champion, while Dani Pedrosa (1:52.971) will start from third position on the grid.

After dominating the early practice sessions, Australian Casey Stoner (1:53.375) qualified fourth fastest, narrowly in front of Loris Capirossi (1:53.559) and reigning World Champion Nicky Hayden (1:53.613).

American John Hopkins was seventh fastest (1:53.637), while rounding out the top ten were Randy De Puniet (1:53.706), Australian Chris Vermeulen (1:53.771) and Toni Elias (1:53.835).

Results from qualifying at the Turkish MotoGP:
1. Valentino Rossi 1:52.795
2. Colin Edwards 1:52.944
3. Dani Pedrosa 1:52.971
4. Casey Stoner 1:53.375
5. Loris Capirossi 1:53.559
6. Nicky Hayden 1:53.613
7. John Hopkins 1:53.637
8. Randy De Puniet 1:53.706
9. Chris Vermeulen 1:53.771
10. Toni Elias 1:53.835
