In one of the most exciting races of the season, Yamaha's Rossi and his Ducati rival exchanged the lead several times before the five-times world champion made a decisive move on the final lap to claim his fourth win at the circuit. Spain's Honda rider Dani Pedrosa, second in the title race, overcame a knee injury to finish third ahead of his team mate and championship leader Nicky Hayden of the U.S. Spaniard Sete Gibernau, on a Ducati, was fifth with American Suzuki rider John Hopkins sixth. Hayden's world championship lead over second-placed Pedrosa was cut to 22 points with Rossi 26 points behind the American. After heavy rained washed out qualifying on Saturday, Rossi was hoping to give Malaysian fans a race to remember. "I would pay for racing like this," Rossi told reporters after his fifth win of the season. "This time I won but even if I was second in the battle I would be happy because it was an incredible fight, one of the best of my career. "When we fight together, it is a great show. We are old-style riders, very aggressive, overtaking a lot and enjoying the battle. It's a lot of fun." Capirossi, last year's Sepang winner who triumphed in the Czech Republic last month, said the thrill of head-to-head racing removed the disappointment of finishing second. "When we have a battle like this, it is not a problem to lose because it was a fantastic race with a lot of overtaking," said Capirossi, who still has title ambitions, lying 43 points behind Hayden. Sembrava che la Ducati avrebbe avuto la meglio anche oggi, con un Capirossi in versione gladiatore indomabile, in testa all’inizio dell’ultimo giro con una lunghezza di vantaggio guadagnata dopo un duello serratissimo con Valentino durato tutto il GP. Invece nel settore centrale Vale si è avvicinato e ha sferrato il suo attacco, letale come il morso del cobra che a queste latitudini è veramente temuto. E la gara è finita. Bravi entrambi, comunque. A quattro gare dalla fine Valentino ha rosicchiato punti a Nicky Hayden, oggi quarto in scioltezza davanti a Sete Gibernau e (lo dice l’aritmetica) ancora favorito per la vittoria finale. Ma non potrà distrarsi mai perché nelle immediate vicinanze c’è anche l’altro grande eroe di questa giornata, Daniel Pedrosa. Dietro ai nostri due favolosi veterani che hanno fatto corsa solitaria, oggi si è piazzato lo spagnolo della Honda, autore di un GP incredibile perché corso con un ginocchio ferito. Ora ha 22 punti di ritardo da Hayden, è ancora in corsa per il titolo e la sua stagione si può già classificare più che ottima. In 125 ha vinto il dominatore della stagione Alvaro Bautista. Lo spagnolo dell’Aprilia ha autorevolmente messo in fila Mika Kallio e il connazionale Hector Faubel. Quarto Julian Simon, settimo Mattia Pasini. Nel Mondiale Bautista ha 255 contro i 181 di Kallio. In 250 trionfo di Jorge Lorenzo davanti al nostro Andrea Dovizioso e ad Alex De Angelis. Quinto Roberto Locatelli. Nel Mondiale è duello serrato tra i primi due: lo spagnolo ha 224 punti, il forlivese 212. (gazzetta) |
