MotoGP: Aussies dominating Donnington sessions Print E-mail
Saturday, 23 June 2007
Three Australians made the top 10 as Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa recorded the fastest time in Friday's second practice at Donington. In wet conditions at the Leicestershire track, Spaniard Pedrosa clocked 1:43.870 during the afternoon session as Ducati's Australian rider Casey Stoner came in fifth fastest with a time of 1:43.513.

But, at the end of the British MotoGP's first day, Stoner's combined times saw the Australian MotoGP World Championship leader earn the fastest time of 1:43.749 as he made a mockery of pre-race claims he might struggle on the track.

Last season's world champion Nicky Hayden has endured a difficult first seven rounds of 2007, but the American looked to be enjoying riding on his new Repsol Honda chassis as he recorded the second-fastest times in both sessions to be second behind Stoner on the day's overall times, while his team-mate Pedrosa took third.

Consistent Frenchman Randy de Puniet may have been slowed down by the wet conditions as he clocked the eighth-fastest time in the second session, but, despite still recovering from a painful knee injury, the brave Kawasaki rider took the fifth-fastest time overall.

Another Australian who always enjoys the wet conditions is Rizla Suzuki's Chris Vermeulen, who took third position in the afternoon session to be fifth overall.

But De Puniet and Vermeulen's efforts were slightly upstaged by another Australian though, in the impressive Anthony West, who was hired by Kawasaki at the start of the week to replace Olivier Jacque after the Frenchman was forced to retire after crashing at Barcelona.

Despite it being West's first MotoGP for some time, the Australian took his impressive R6 form to Donington and claimed the fifth-fastest time of 1:44.498 during the second session to be the seventh-fastest overall after day 1.
