Casey Stoner has recorded his seventh MotoGP race victory of the year at Brno in the Czech Republic to stretch his world championship lead to 60 points.
The 21-year-old Australian started the race from pole, and was never headed, riding a faultless race out in front. While Hopkins kept pace with the Ducati world championship favourite for the first half of the race, Stoner stepped it up in the final ten laps cruising away to a 7.903 second victory.
While most of Stoner's victories this year have come in dramatic circumstances, it was all too easy for the New South Welshman this time, as he completely dominated, leaving those back in the field to jostle for the remaining points. Hopkins rode an excellent race to take his second podium of the season while Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden took third, clear of team-mate Dani Pedrosa
Chris Vermeulen did his compatriot plenty of favours, powering up from eighth on the grid to finish fifth ahead of Stoner's sole championship rival, Valentino Rossi, who ended up seventh. Vermeulen is now in fourth position in the championship, two points ahead of team-mate Hopkins.
The Queenslander battled with the seven-time world champion with ten laps remaining and finally got past the Italian, who again struggled for grip. Loris Capirossi, Stoner's team-mate, and the 2006 Czech MotoGP winner took his chance to get past his old rival.
Randy De Puniet challenged Rossi late but settled for eighth, while Alex Barros and Carlos Checa rounded out the top ten.
Australia's Anthony West continued his consistent form on the Kawasaki, taking four points in 12th
Colin Edwards' torrid time with Yamaha continued as he suffered mechanical problem which forced him off early in the race. He failed to finish.
Rossi's poor showing has him on 186 points, giving Stoner (246) a near unassailable lead in the championship. He remains on track to clinch his first world title at Phillip Island. Dani Pedrosa is third on 168.
In the 250ccs, Jorge Lorenzo rebounded from a couple of poor performances to dominate his rivals and stretch his championship lead to 30 points.
The Spanish world champion, who will move into MotoGP class next year, jumped from pole and dominated the race, defeating title rival Andrea Dovizioso by over seven seconds. It was Lorenzo's seventh win of the year and he is now right back on track for his title defence.
Alex De Angelis had his worst result for the year, giving up a podium spot when he crashed out late in the race and allowed Finn Mika Kallio to take third. Lorenzo is on 216, Dovizioso on 186, and De Angelis on 176.
In the 125cc class, Hector Faubel prevailed in a thrilling battle with Mattia Pasini, taking a ten-point championship lead over Gabor Talmacsi. Five riders had the chance to win the race, with the two world championship rivals joined by Pasini, Lukas Pesek and Sergio Gadea in the battle for the podium late in the race.
Gadea crashed out, leaving the other four to fight it out and Faubel edged out Pasini by just 0.05 of a second while Pesek took third, pleasing the parochial home crowd. Talmacsi had to settle for fourth and now has 10 points to make up on Faubel in the race for the championship. Sportal
