LifeStyle: ModaItalia - Italian says 'no' to inheriting millions Print E-mail
Thursday, 17 August 2006

Money PitItalian lawyers who have been looking for the reluctant heir of a two-million euro estate for eight years expressed relief Monday that the man has been found. Angelo Piroddi, 45, was tracked down by a British newspaper last week after the lawyers of his dead mother's estate said he risked losing his inheritance if he was not located. But the man, who left the Sardinian town of Barisardo for Britain 25 years ago to escape family feuding, surprised everyone by insisting he does not want the bequest.

"I don't want the money. I'm going to give it away to someone else," he told The Mail on Sunday, the newspaper that found him living in a bed-sit. "I don't like the people who gave me that inheritance, so why would I want the money? "My mother was always giving me problems when she was alive and now she is giving me problems when she is dead. I'm not going to be rich. I'm going to be poor, as I am now".

Angelo Piroddi, who works as a clerk for the Thames Water company, last contacted his mother in 1992, when he wrote a letter warning her not to try to find him.  (italianalmanac)
