SBS Radio's Night of Music for Italian earthquake victims Print E-mail

On Sunday 10 May at 8pm SBS Radio presents Sydney's most accomplished Italian-Australian musicians, in a special concert event to raise money for the victims of the Abruzzo earthquake.

The devastating earthquake earlier this month killed nearly 300 people, and left more than 20,000 people homeless in the Abruzzo region in Italy.

Held at Sydney venue The Basement in Circular Quay, the all-star line up includes
Italian-Australians Guy Strazz, described as a virtuoso of the electro-acoustic classical and steel-string guitar; and Virna Sanzone, who is emerging as one of Australia's most captivating singers. Her passionate delivery and understated approach have seen her compared to vocal masters such as Roberta Flack and kd lang.

Roman-born Carlotta Centanni will also feature at the inspiring fundraiser.  Centanni has an extensive musical CV, winning critical acclaim both for her albums and live performances renowned jazz club La Palma and at various venues in Rome.

Other performers on the night include Italian-Australian Woman of the Year, soprano and mardi-gras cabaret diva Nadia Piave with veteran guitarist Gino Pengue; and the extraordinary 2nd generation musical family D'Abruzzo, fronted by the flamboyant 20 year old Aaron D'Abruzzo and his pioneering dad Maurice, who was actually born in Italy's Abruzzo region.  Famed for their energy and unique sound, D’Abruzzo promise a saucy blend of exotic rhythms topped with sizzling rock'n'soul vocals.

All proceeds will be donated to the Australian Abruzzo Earthquake Appeal Fund and are tax-deductable.  General admission standing tickets start at $49 / $29 concession; with dinner and show tickets also available.

Italian SBS Radio’s Abruzzo Earthquake Fundraising Concert @ the basement


SBS Radio presents Sydney’s most accomplished Italian-Australian musicians playing a range of jazz and funk music in a special concert  for the victims of the earthquake that on April 6 killed 300 people, left tens of thousands homeless and devastated countless communities in the Italian region of Abruzzo.

All proceeds will be donated to the Australian Abruzzo Earthquake Appeal Fund (donations are tax deductible).

Italian-Australian Woman of the Year, Nadia Piave is a raconteur, soprano, teacher, mardi-gras cabaret diva and erstwhile gelato-bar queen. Her music evokes a broad emotional range - from exhilaration and deep joy to the bittersweet sadness of lost love. Her album 'Rose' is a collection of classic love songs from Italy and France, rendered impeccably by Nadia's exquisite, rich voice.
Veteran of the Sydney music scene, guitarist Gino Pengue has accompanied most local performers and many visiting artists. Sought after as a session player, Gino's work is found on many recordings.

Roman-born Carlotta Centanni released her latest album 'Respiro' in June of 2008 and then moved to Sydney. Her performances in Italy are extensive: in Rome alone she has performed at Supper Club, Big Mama, Gusto, Caf Latino, Classico, as well as the Hilton and Sheraton Hotels.

Guy Strazz was born in Italy from a musical family. After travelling to Australia for a holiday, Guy established new roots in Sydney where he attended the NSW Conservatorium of Music. With a Diploma in jazz and a thirst for travel he eventually studied under the late pianist Roger Frampton. Described as a virtuoso of the electro-acoustic classical and steel-string guitar, Guy has toured South East Asia, India, South Africa, Europe and Australasia, performing at leading jazz festivals.
