Ferrari Team boss Jean Todt has urged fans to allow Kimi Raikkonen time to adjust into his new role and not to compare him with retired world-champion Michael Schumacher.
Raikkonen, who spent five years with McLaren, will drive alongside Italian Felipe Massa at Ferrari in 2007 and Todt believes the pair will develop some 'healthy competition'.
The young Finn has signed with Ferrari for three years, enough time Todt says for Raikkonen to move out of Schumacher's shadow and develop his own reputation. "We didn't hire Raikkonen because Schumacher decided to leave racing," Todt told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. "We had to think about the future, and Raikkonen was the driver best suited to Ferrari's ambitions." "He's very strong, quick, and his age - 27 years old - allows for many years of work at Ferrari. Any comparisons would be out of place." Todt still remains hopeful of retaining seven-time world champion Schumacher as a mentor to Raikkonen so he can take help him take his driving ability to the next level. "We intend to take advantage of his (Schumacher's) knowledge and experience," Todt said "Raikkonen is still a question mark here. This is where Schumacher could intervene." "I consider that unique in the world. It's an asset not to be lost, at the service of Ferrari and their drivers." Schumacher, who retired in October, is yet to confirm his desire to continue in a new role with Ferrari but is expected to announce his decision shortly. Ferrari will launch their 2007 season on Sunday, however the team's new car may not be ready. A sleek new design is predicted with some major visual changes to the body of the car expected to be made before the first race of the season. Todt said, like their predecessor, his new drivers would be provided with top performing vehicles to work with during the year. "Schumacher wouldn't have won 72 Grand Prix with Ferrari if he didn't have a great team made of excellent professionals and if he didn't race with a very strong car," Todt said.
"We'll do the utmost to put Raikkonen and Massa in those same conditions." The 2007 Formula One season will kick off with the Melbourne Grand Prix on March 18. sportal
