Third was Hamilton (McLaren). Scary incident for Kovalainen, who ended in the barrier at the exit of a fast turn: he's in the hospital but unharmed. Alonso crashed out.
The race belonged to Ferrari from beginning to end. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen won the Spanish Grand Prix at Montmeló followed by his team-mate Felipe Massa. It was the expected outcome based on the qualifiers and it will give the Finnish driver a bigger advantage in the championship: Kimi now has 29 points, followed by Lewis Hamilton with 20 (he finished third today), Robert Kubica with 19 (fourth today with BMW), and Felipe Massa with 18. THE RACE - Kimi led the race from the start while his team-mate Felipe surprised Fernando Alonso (Renault) who ended up on the grass at the end of the formation lap. The Spaniard was sixth when his car started to have engine failure and had to withdraw half-way through the race. The positions didn't change after two pit stops. Not a lot of overtaking, except for a few cases at the back of the race. The only surprises today were the amount of drivers that withdrew from the race. At the end of the race, Webber (Red Bull), Button (Honda), Nakajima (Williams) and Trulli (Toyota) were also in the points. Nick Heidfeld was penalised by an overly-strict regulation that forbids drivers to service their cars when there is a safety-car situation on the track. But he felt he didn't have a choice and he needed to stop, which ended up ruining his race. SCARING MOMENTS - Fear was one of the words of the day in Montmeló. After 22 laps, Heikki Kovalainen's McLaren, who was leading the race at the moment because of the pit stops by other drivers, came out of a fast turn to crash into the barrier. The cause of the problem seems to be a sudden flat front-left tyre. The crash against the tyre barrier at such a high speed was terrifying. The race went immediately into a safety-car situation while medical teams were sent to the scene of the crash. After being examined at the track's medical centre, Kovalainen was transferred by helicopter to a local hospital for further examination. He hit his head. However, he doesn't seem to have any serious injuries. Gasport |
