(crash.net) Michael Schumacher admitted that second place was the best that he could manage in the British Grand Prix after slipping a further two points behind Fernando Alonso in the championship.

Having stated that he was surprised to be three tenths behind Alonso after qualifying, Schumacher was never able to challenge the Spaniard, trailing Kimi Raikkonen for the majority of the race.

Despite almost coming together following the safety car, Schumacher kept Raikkonen honest before setting a blistering out lap after his second stop to vault ahead of the Finn and set about chasing Alonso.

However, despite being quicker in the latter stages as Alonso began to cruise, Schumacher was only able to get to within 14 seconds.
