Italian Cup: Inter, Roma and Samp all through (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Thursday, 18 January 2007
Sampdoria players celebrate the winInter Milan remain firmly on course for the Italian double after completing a 4-0 aggregate win over Empoli on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning AEDT) in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

Having won 2-0 at Empoli in the first leg, Inter were always comfortable against their visitors from Tuscany at the San Siro.

Esteban Cambiasso gave them the lead on the night after 28 minutes and the victory was secured by Italy World Cup-winning full back Fabio Grosso who scored a fine goal with his left foot.

With Inter nine points clear in the Serie A table and alive and kicking in the Champions League, a treble could even be on the cards for the Nerazzurri.

Inter's closest rivals for the Scudetto, Roma, had a far trickier journey into the last four where they will play the victors of the semi-final between AC Milan and Arezzo.

Roma were defending a 2-1 first-leg lead at Parma and made it through by drawing 2-2 in the second leg at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Twice Zlatan Muslimovic gave the hosts the lead but twice the Eternal City club drew level, first through Daniele De Rossi and then with the tie-winning goal, a volley, from David Pizarro.

Roma gave a debut to striker Francesco Tavano who was recently signed on loan from Valencia.

Inter will play Sampdoria in the semi-final after the club from Genoa progressed 3-1 on aggregate against Chievo with a 2-1 win in the second leg in Verona.

Chievo had lost the first leg 1-0 and then Emiliano Bonazzoli gave Samp the lead on the night after 42 minutes.

Michele Marcolini pulled the hosts level on the night just before the interval.

Gennaro Delvecchio sealed victory on the night for Samp when he made it 2-1 five minutes from the time at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi.
