Coppa Italia: Roma to face Inter in Italian Cup Final Print E-mail
Friday, 09 May 2008

Sample ImageDefending champions Roma will face Internazionale in the Coppa Italia final after a 1-1 draw at Catania took them through 2-1 on aggregate.

Alberto Aquilani's penalty kick in the 27th minute put Roma ahead after Mariano Izco had brought down Mirko Vucinic inside the area.

But Roma's joy lasted only two minutes as Catania equalised with Cristian Silvestri's header.

After the restart, goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri was called to make two crucial saves from Aquilani and Simone Perrotta's strike.

The visitors were unlucky not to take the lead in the 57th minute when Perrotta's bullet strike rebounded off the crossbar.

Catania, who are fighting to avoid relegation, mustered little in the second half as Roma held on to reach their fourth consecutive final.

"It's a great satisfaction for us," said Roma coach Luciano Spalletti, whose team won 1-0 in the opening leg in the Eternal City.

"We will play the final in front of our home fans. This final is the confirmation that my players have done well this season."

"It hasn't been an easy game but now we must focus on beating Atalanta (in Serie A on Sunday)."

The final will be played on May 25 (AEST) at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.
