Coppa Italia: Roma sign Wilhelmsson and beat Parma Print E-mail
Thursday, 11 January 2007
AS Roma Amantino Mancini scored one goal and set up another for Francesco Totti as AS Roma beat Parma 2-1 in the first leg of the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Mancini dribbled free and scored with a delicate lob shot from the edge of the area in the 19th minute. In the 67th, Mancini carried the ball upfield and drew the goalkeeper before crossing to Totti, who converted into an empty net.

Totti injured his left hand and exited the game in the 79th.

Zlatko Dedic scored from the center of the area for Parma in the 87th.

"That goal puts everything back in play," Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. "We're going to have to play hard (in Parma). Overall, though, we performed well tonight for long stretches."

Striker Francesco Tavano, who was loaned from Valencia, did not make his debut for Roma after contracting a fever.

Elsewhere, a 21st-minute goal by defender Luigi Sala gave Sampdoria a 1-0 win over Chievo Verona.

Sampdoria ended with nine men after Christian Maggio and Ruben Olivera were expelled in the final 10 minutes.

A player on Chievo's bench, Davide Mandelli, was hit by an object thrown from the stands following the expulsions, and he left for the locker room holding ice to his neck.

Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini attended the Samp-Chievo game. Inter faces both clubs in the league this month and could also meet one of them in the Italian Cup semifinals.

Inter beat Empoli 2-0 on Tuesday with goals by Adriano and Ivan Cordoba.

AC Milan faces second-division Arezzo on Thursday in the other quarterfinal.

Return legs are scheduled for next week.

Wilhelmsson joins Roma on loan

Christian WilhelmssonSweden international midfielder Christian Wilhelmsson has joined Roma on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move.

The Nantes winger passed a medical and signed a loan deal, tying him to the Italian club until the summer.

Roma have the option of buying Wilhelmsson at the end of his loan spell.

He moved to Les Canaris last summer from Anderlecht, but only made 13 league appearances for the side.
