Roma have lifted the 2006/07 Coppa Italia despite going down to a 2-1 second-leg final defeat to Italian champions Inter Milan.

The visitors from the Italian capital had drubbed Inter 6-2 in the first leg in the Eternal City, therefore winning 7-4 on aggregate.

Inter started well and goals from Argentinian pair Hernan Crespo and Julio Cruz gave them some hope.

However, a strike from Roma's Italian World Cup-winning midfielder Simone Perrotta effectively killed the tie off.

Both teams finished the game with 10 men with Inter's Ivan Cordoba and Roma's Christian Panucci dismissed.

Roma started well with Francesco Totti not far off the mark with an early shot but then Dejan Stankovic hit the crossbar for Inter.

Crespo was denied from close range as Inter let another chance go begging while Cruz had a 'goal' disallowed for offside.

Stankovic missed an early chance in the second half but Roberto Mancini's team then opened the scoring.

Crespo got ahead of marker Matteo Ferrari to divert a cross from Maicon past Alexander Doni.

Totti narrowly missed the target for Roma and after 56 minutes Inter made further inroads into Roma's lead.

Luis Figo played the ball to Cruz whose shot went through the legs of Doni and into the net.

The San Siro was rocking now but Mancini was banished from the touchline for protesting too strongly.

Inter goalkeeper Francesco Toldo saved well from Mexes and then Totti hit the woodwork.

Roma were looking dangerous on the break and David Pizarro narrowly missed.

Cordoba got his red card after 71 minutes after his second caution of the game.

Seven minutes from time, Perrotta ended any doubt about the outcome as he deflected a driven ball from Totti past Toldo.

There was even time for Totti to hit the crossbar and for Panucci to be ordered off for a last-man foul on Alvaro Recoba.

Soon the Eternal City club could celebrate in earnest with their supporters as they denied Inter a domestic double. PA Sport

E allora la banda Spalletti può alzare al cielo azzurro milanese la sua ottava coppa Italia, il primo trofeo conquistato dal tecnico di Certaldo. Una prova di maturità di una squadra stavolta messa alle corde, ma che ha saputo tenere botta e poi, passata la mareggiata, piazzare la stoccata decisiva con il gol di Perrotta, che ha replicato a quelli di Crespo e Cruz. Un successo che diventa fondamentale per la prospettiva di aprire un ciclo con questo gruppo di giocatori, incentivo prezioso per tenere a Roma alcuni pezzi pregiati del mercato. L’Inter spariglia i confronti diretti stagonali con la rivale della capitale: il bilancio finale è 3-2, considerando Supercoppa, andata e ritorno di campionato e coppa Italia. Ma soprattutto dimostra che la "grandinata" subita all’andata è stato un episodio isolato irripetibile, incastrato in una stagione da incorniciare.
