Uefa Champions League: Roma into quarters (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 March 2007
Francesco Totti and Alessandro Mancini scored first-half goals as Roma advanced into the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time thanks to a smash-and-grab second-leg 2-0 win over Lyon at the Stade Gerland.

The Italians had it all to do on Tuesday night after managing only a goalless draw at home in the first leg.

But despite being under the cosh for much of the return fixture, Totti's 21st-minute header and Mancini's superb individual 43rd-minute effort saw them home.

Lyon, for whom Juninho was a constant danger, battled away gamely but found visiting goalkeeper Alexander Doni in superb fettle.

He pulled off a string of fine saves, especially in the second half, to somehow keep the hosts scoreless in the tie.

Les Gones came into the game having found their form after a stuttery start to 2007, and they caused Roma problems early on.

As is often the case, it was Juninho's free-kicks that was the main source of danger.

Having already tested Doni with a fourth-minute sighter from distance, the Brazilian then provided textbook set-piece deliveries for Sebastien Squillaci and then Sidney Govou.

However, the centre-back's header was weak and directed straight at Doni, while Govou's glancing effort minutes later just cleared the bar.

It was therefore slightly against the run of play when the Eternal City giants took the lead.

If Juninho is Lyon's dangerman, then Totti is Roma's, and it was the World Cup-winner who broke the deadlock - heading home unmarked from six yards after he had been found by a pinpoint left-wing cross from Max Tonetti.

Lyon had afforded Tonetti far too much space on that occasion, and for the next 10 minutes, Roma continued to find gaps behind a shell-shocked home backline.

Les Gones managed to regroup, only to see the game effectively killed in the 43rd minute thanks to a piece of individual brilliance by Mancini.

The Brazilian forward received a David Pizarro crossfield pass 30 yards out on the left.

He befuddled Anthony Reveillere with numerous stepovers before finally rounding the right-back and thrashing a left-foot shot high to Gregory Coupet's right into the roof of the net.

Sylvain Wiltord and Kim Kallstrom were thrown on by Lyon coach Gerard Houllier for the second half.

And Wiltord almost halved the deficit in the 50th minute, running onto a Reveillere through-ball but seeing his shot blocked by the legs of Doni.

Lyon was cranking up the pressure and Doni needing to perform more heroics to tip aside a powerful Juninho effort from 15 yards.

Roma was firmly on the back foot and it was Kallstrom's turn to test Doni, the goalkeeper amazingly palming over a wicked left-foot shot that had taken a deflection off Philippe Mexes on the way.

Houllier introduced another attacker, Karim Benzema, into the fray and he fired a low shot just past the post in the 75th minute.

As the final whistle neared, Lyon struggled to keep its frustration in check - indeed, striker Fred was lucky to stay on the pitch after lashing out at Roma defender Christian Chivu, who was imperious on the night. Sportal
