After scoring two away goals in Manchester, Milan went on to teach Manchester United a "how to play football" lesson by administering a thorough beating. Milan started the semi-final 3-2 down but were ahead on away goals after just 11 minutes when Clarence Seedorf headed down for Kaka to drill into the corner. Seedorf capitalised on confusion in the United defence to fire in a second after half an hour. And substitute Alberto Gilardino broke away to wrap up an easy win as United limped out in disappointing fashion. The result ended United's dreams of repeating their 1999 Treble, but they can have no complaints after being totally outclassed by their Italian opponents. Sir Alex Ferguson named Nemanja Vidic in his starting line-up after the defender's recovery from a broken collarbone but the Serb, like his colleagues, was overwhelmed by Milan's superior passing and movement in wet conditions.
The hosts threatened in the very first minute when Kaka delivered a dangerous ball across goal, after three minutes when Seedorf forced Edwin van der Sar to tip over and again on seven minutes when Kaka shot straight at the United keeper. The goal, then, was no more than Milan deserved, Seedorf nodding the ball down for Kaka to hammer home his 10th Champions League goal of the season. United's much-vaunted attack was proving toothless. Cristiano Ronaldo, who started on the left, was hardly in the game, Ryan Giggs was similarly anonymous, while Wayne Rooney's touch deserted him. The England striker was guilty of giving the ball away on numerous occasions but at least his errors were nowhere near as catastrophic as Gabriel Heinze's moment of madness. As United tried to play their way out of defence, the left-back inexplicably passed back to Vidic, who then compounded his team-mate's error by slipping as he scrambled to clear. Milan regained possession and the ball eventually fell for Seedorf, who rode Vidic's challenge before finding the same corner as Kaka. At half-time, optimistic United fans might have pointed to their side's recovery from two goals down in the 1999 semi-final against Juventus in Turin, but Milan were simply too good for such lacklustre opponents. United had far more possession in the second half but rarely threatened a calm and composed Milan defence nor did they manage to test Milan's out-of-form keeper Dida. Rooney finally found an accurate pass to set up Darren Fletcher, but he skewed wide and that was as good a chance as United fashioned. And Milan booked a repeat of the 2005 final against Liverpool when Gilardino galloped through a gaping hole in the United defence and stroked the ball past a stranded Van der Sar. Ricardo inquadra l'angolo più impossibile e per Van der Sar non c'è spazio per la gloria: è l'11'; è l'1-0. Milan stratosferico. Dopo il primo quarto d'ora sale il Manchester; reazione obbligata e favorita dal Milan che arretra di parecchi metri. Con i corridoi bloccati, la manovra passa attraverso Scholes, poi Giggs al 20' impegna Dida a terra. Il Manchester si accorcia e il Milan ragiona di più. Ricuce il piccolo strappo, gestisce il possesso palla. Punge con manovra corale e al 30' raddoppia. Straordinario Seedorf che al limite resiste all'entrata del disastroso Vidic e infila ancora lì, in quell'angolino. OTTO, DIECI GATTUSO - Milan rabbioso, in pressing. Sontuoso nell'uno contro uno. Gattuso e Ambrosini sono argini. I due mediani di rottura spezzano le trame degli inglesi e attaccano senza sosta. Al 41' Oddo, dopo scambi prodigiosi, serve Inzaghi: destro fuori di poco. Guastatore nato. Pippo. Produrrà poco, ma non dà tregua agli avversari, aprendo spazi ai compagni. Alla fine del primo tempo c'è da stropicciarsi gli occhi. Qualcosa di sublime. E da tenere in mente nella ripresa. Che comincia senza cambi. ATTESA E CHIUSURA - Il Manchester pressa alto e il Milan contiene, ma quando aggredisce, l'undici di Ferguson va in palla. Come quando all'8' Kakà in accelerazione si fa respingere da Van der Sar che spiazza Inzaghi appostato. Un neo? Andrea Pirlo. Perde troppe palle, al punto da far perdere la pazienza al sontuoso Gattuso. Il Milan nicchia e a fasi alterne subisce il ritorno del Manchester, e preso atto che per Rooney non ce n'è, si concentra sulle giocate di Ronaldo, ma nella serata rossonera la difesa non sbaglia un colpo. Il Milan compie l'errore di rimanere arretrato, subendo fin troppo la spinta dei Red Devils. Gattuso e Ambrosini si moltiplicano; erigono dighe. Servirebbe un 3-0. Inzaghi, che non ne ha più, lascia il posto a Gilardino. Buono l'approccio dell'attaccante che apre varchi, ma a cui manca solo il gol. E' il tempo della passione. Ferguson sacrifica un difensore, O'Shea, per un attaccate, Saha. Ma certe notti regalano sensazioni uniche. Lo straordinario Ambrosini lancia il messaggio a Gilardino che questa volta non può sbagliare: praterie, volata e 3-0. Dopo i crampi di Gattuso, quelli di Kakà. I rossoneri spazzano, ma il Manchester non restituisce il favore. Alla faccia del fair-play britannico. Gattuso è feroce e subito lascia il posto a Cafu.
