Champions: Pandev double for Lazio, Milan misery continues Print E-mail
Thursday, 04 October 2007

Goran Pandev scores for Lazio against Real MadridGoran Pandev bagged a splendid brace as Lazio held Real Madrid 2-2 in Rome and probably deserved all three points. AC Milan were the victims of their own 'keeper, going down 2-1 in Glasgow.

The Biancocelesti had a bright start, as in the opening minutes Sergio Ramos needed a last-ditch tackle to halt Rocchi, while Cannavaro cut short Pandev's counter.

However, it was Real who scored at their first attempt. Luciano Zauri and Guglielmo Stendardo were caught napping when Wesley Sneijder whipped in a free kick as Ruud van Nistelrooy added to his European tally relatively undisturbed.

The deserved equaliser finally came on 32 minutes. Rocchi's right-foot strike was deflected out for a corner. As the clearance failed, Zauri chipped it up for a looping Stendardo header and Pandev placed his fantastic volley into the top corner. It was a wonderful goal from the Macedonian and his first in the Champions League.

Ballotta also got down well to block van Nistelrooy's volley into the ground, but Lazio should have taken the lead on 57 minutes. Pandev's chipped pass over the defence was hooked down by Rocchi, but the ankle injury may have hindered him as he turned on to the side-netting from point-blank range.

They were made to pay for those misses, as Real again scored with one of their only real opportunities. van Nistelrooy sprung the offside trap in midfield to go clear and he lifted the finish over Ballotta from the edge of the area.

Lazio finally snatched another equaliser with that man Pandev again. Makinwa won back the ball in midfield, Pandev drew two defenders towards him, yet placed a left-foot strike beneath their legs to beat Casillas.

Lazio are now in third place on two points in group c behind Real Madrid and Olympiakos (4 points each). Werder Bremen are last without any points. Lazio will play Werder in their next clash.

Lazio: Ballotta; Behrami (Scaloni 67), Stendardo, Cribari, Zauri; Mudingayi, Ledesma, Mutarelli; Mauri (Del Nero 77); Pandev, Rocchi (Makinwa 66)
Real Madrid: Casillas; Sergio Ramos, Cannavaro, Heinze, Marcelo; Sneijder (Drenthe 88), Diarra, Guti, Robben (Higuain 78); Raul (Saviola 83), van Nistelrooy

In Glasgow AC Milan's Brazilian 'keeper Nelson Dida was the centre of Milan's shock 2-1 defeat at Celtic, as he was shaky on both goals and stretchered off after he was attacked by a fan.

It was sweet revenge for new Celtic signing Italian Massimo Donati, who couldn't even find a spot on Milan's orange peelers list over the last few years and has spent numerous seasons on loan at Italy's weakest clubs, but cruised on into Scottish football without any problem as the competition is below Serie C2.

The first half was a battle between Milan trying to adapt their ground passing technique to the rain soaked field and Celtic trying to chop down rossoneri passes and legs. The score was nil all at the half-time break.

Milan were dominating the second half but could not get any real chance on goal due to the slippery conditions and lone striker Pippo Inzaghi was unable to latch onto the good work of Seedorf and the World Champion was replaced by fellow FIFA 2006 World Cup winner Alberto Gilardino late on.

Against the run of play, Celtic found themselves with a corner kick and Dida missed the resulting kick and the ball was turned in by Milan substitute Gourcuff for an own goal in the 62nd minute but the goal was awarded to Celtic's McManus in true EPL/SPL style as he was nearest to the ball.

Pirlo nearly scored an equaliser moments later with a deflected free kick, but Boruc somehow managed to readjust his position and flap it off the line.

Celtic midfielder Brown upped his shin kicking average to 24 per game, 8 times more than his pass completion average of 3.

The referee pointed to the spot soon after, as Milan captain Ambrosini was held down by Lee Naylor as he went to head the ball. Kaka stepped up and fired low past Boruc, sending him the wrong way to draw Milan level.

Milan pushed forward, beating Celtic's flailing legs, knees and rugby tackles but against the run of play Celtic took the lead in the final minute. The Rossoneri failed to clear a corner kick and Dida parried Caldwell's low drive into the path of Socceroo Scott McDonald for the easiest of tap-ins.

To make matters worse, a fan ran on to the pitch and slapped Dida as he ran past! Probably for his standard of goalkeeping. The Brazilian goalkeeper went down clutching his face and was stretchered off, although the contact did not seem to be particularly hard, unless he hit him on the eye. Dida was replaced by Australian 'keeper Zeljko Kalac.

All in all a shocking performance by Ancellotti's men and a woeful standard of football by Celtic, who were strengthened by the on field appearance of Milan's Brazilian goalkeeper Nelson Dida. Without him, the toe punts (and chances) on goal for the verdebianci would have been zero.

For the football purist a match to forget. For Celtic fans nothing but joy - this will be the closest they will ever get to winning something.

Current UEFA Champions League holder Milan are in equal second place with Celtic on three points but are above on goal difference and will play Shakhtar Donetsk, who thrashed the Scots 2-0 in Ukraine on matchday one thanks to a goal from Italian Christian Lucarelli, in their next match.

Celtic: Boruc; Doumbe’ (Kennedy 80), G Caldwell, McManus, Naylor; Donati, Hartley, Jarosik (Killen 84), McGeady (Nakamura 84); S Brown; McDonald
Milan: Dida (Kalac 93); Oddo, Bonera, Nesta, Jankulovski; Gattuso, Pirlo, Ambrosini; Kaka, Seedorf (Gourcuff 55); Inzaghi (Gilardino 77)
