Champions League: Roma into knock-out round (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 December 2006
Roma qualifyChristian Panucci's first-half goal earned AS Roma a narrow 1-0 victory against an under-strength Valencia and ensured his side a place in the knockout stage of the Champions League.

The veteran defender was the hero for the hosts with his 13th-minute header confirming that his team would finish second in Group D behind the Spaniards.

The Romans went into the game without captain Francesco Totti, who was sidelined with an ankle injury, but the Italy striker made his presence felt as he looked down from the Stadio Olimpico stands.

After 68 minutes, goalscorer Panucci made an intervention in a more familiar part of the pitch, completing a fine recovering tackle on Joaquin.

Despite Valencia's late efforts to find the equaliser, it was Roma who came closer to scoring for a second time but Butelle pulled off a good reaction save to clear Mancini's left-footed drive from the edge of the area.
