Inter Milan and Juventus kicked off their respective UEFA Champions League campaigns with wins as Fiorentina drew away in Lyon. Roma stumbled against UCL minnows Cluj at the Stadio Olimpico. Adriano made a spectacular comeback and Amantino Mancini was also on target as Inter won 2-0 away to Panathinaikos. It was L'Imperatore's first goal for his club since a 1-0 at Reggina on October 20, 2007. With Anorthosis' 0-0 draw in Bremen, the Nerazzurri go clear at the top of Group B.
Inter got their first goal and Ibrahimovic was decisive for Amantino Mancini's strike. Ibra held up a long pass forward, used his strength to ride two Nilsson challenges and rolled across for the totally unmarked Mancini to side-foot home.
Adriano came on for Mancini in the final minutes and made a spectacular comeback in the Inter shirt! He was sent clear by Ibrahimovic on the counter and kept his cool to cannon a powerful left-foot finish under the crossbar from nine yards! He had been on the field for less than two minutes when he got his name on the scoresheet.
It was the Brazilian's first competitive appearance for the club in a year and he hadn't netted in the Champions League since the 2-1 win over Villarreal on March 29, 2006.
Panathinaikos: Galinovic; Vindra, Simao, Goumas, Nillson (Hristodouloupoulos 72); Moon (Souza 82), Gilberto Silva; Mattos, Karagounis (Ivanschitz 36), Clayton; Salpingidis
Cluj made their all-time Champions League debut under Italian Coach Maurizio Trombetta, having become the first non-Bucharest team to win the Romanian League in 17 years.
Panucci scored his 10th goal in the Champions League, a well-timed header in the 16th minute to get on the end of De Rossi's cross from the right from six yards.
Cluj's Juan Culio equalised in the 27th minute and scored the winner in 49th. Francesco Totti made his comeback from injury, coming on in the 55th minute, obviously trying to get Roma a result.
Roma: Doni; Cicinho, Cassetti, Panucci (Loria 47), Riise (Totti 52); De Rossi, Aquilani; Taddei (Montella 77), Baptista, Tonetto; Vucinic
Alberto Gilardino's brace couldn't earn Fiorentina more than a 2-2 draw in Lyon, as they threw away a 2-0 lead in controversial circumstances.
Luciano Zauri gathered a dreadful Jean-Alain Boumsong clearance down the right and his cross was met by Gilardino's header at the back post for La Viola's first goal.
Fiorentina doubled their lead when Mutu went on a run down the right flank and crossed for another splendid Gilardino cushioned header into the far corner.
However things turned sour when Zauri was down injured in the box but was still considered to be keeping substitute Piquionne onside when meeting Benzema's assist for Lyon's first goal.
Fiorentina were furious, especially as Zauri had to be stretchered off after several minutes of treatment to a suspected fractured cheekbone and substituted by Martin Jorgensen, as a scuffle broke out with a series of arguments.
Lyon saw a way out now and Frey parried a Toulalan half-volley, while Juninho skimmed the crossbar.
The pressure was growing and the equaliser came six minutes from time, as Juninho dummied a shot at goal from his free kick only to slide it across for Benzema's angled drive.
Lyon: Lloris; Reveillere, Bodmer, Boumsong Kallstrom; Juninho, Toulalan, Makoun (Ederson 60); Benzema, Fred (Piquionne 65), Govou (Mounier 89) Fiorentina: Frey; Zauri (Jorgensen 77), Dainelli, Kroldrup, Vargas; Melo, Almiron, Montolivo; Kuzmanovic (Santana 64); Gilardino (Pazzini 81), Mutu Ref: Frojdfelt (Swe)
Juventus defeated Zenit 1-0 in Turin thanks to a sensational Alessandro Del Piero free kick.
Del Piero had been the star of the show and gave Juventus the lead with an absolutely stunning strike. He saw the goalkeeper off his line and absolutely smashed a 30-yard free kick under the crossbar to startle Zenit! It was a magnificent goal from the captain.
