Champions League: Inter and Roma draw at home (English/Italian) Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 February 2007
Totti against LyonIt finished honours even at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday as Roma were held to a goalless stalemate by Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter.

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in a tense affair which was interrupted by a series of free-kicks and 11 yellow cards from English referee Mike Riley.

The opening stages produced scrappy play from both teams, with a succession of fouls denying the crowd the chance to see fast attacking football.

Set pieces continued to provide the best opportunities for both sides as the clock ticked down, and seven minutes from time an inswinging corner from Juninho was swept off the line by defender Christian Panucci.

And Lyon almost snatched the win in the final minute with another free-kick from Juninho which dipped just too late and landed on the roof of the net.

The teams will return to France and Lyon's Stade Gerland for the second leg in two weeks.

In Milan, David Silva cracked home a late equaliser to deny Internazionale and hand Valencia a draw from their trip to the San Siro.

Silva volleyed home with just four minutes remaining to give the Primera Liga side a psychological edge ahead of the Champions League last-16 second leg at the Mestalla in two weeks' time.

It was a better result than performance for Los Che, who were second best for much of the contest against an Inter side which failed to capitalise on their superiority.

Esteban Cambiasso headed the hosts in front after 29 minutes only for David Villa to fire home a spectacular equaliser with a 30-yard free-kick 19 minutes into the second half.

Brazilian full-back Maicon looked to have won it for Inter when his marauding run and composed finish put the Nerazzurri back in front, but Valencia displayed the stubbornness which has seen them surge up the Primera Liga table recently by finding a second equaliser.

Inter dominated the opening half and the only surprise was the fact they did not score more than the one goal. Reuters
