More than 30 of the most enthusiastic and brightest young Italian-Australians will meet in Canberra tomorrow for the Giovani Italiani Australia (GIA) Annual General Meeting (AGM).
As part of the second AGM, GIA (the peak national body for Italian-Australians aged 18-35) will report back to its membership on the progress that has been made in the last 12 months as well as swear in the new members to the executive.“The fact that this year we are holding the second AGM and the third Forum is a testament to the desire of young Italo-Australians to connect with one another and discuss matters that are important to them in a culturally aware environment,” said GIA spokesperson Benjamin Graham. Apart from the usual reporting and division of duties, delegates of the GIA AGM will also discuss new constitutional models for the organisation in an aim to extend its reach to the young Italian-Australian population. “During last year it became clear that we needed to address our governance structure so that it was more inclusive and made the business side of things easier to operate, while continuing to grow our membership and involve more of the giovani (young people). “Since the last time we all got together at Sydney during November 2009 our members have been actively seeking new ways of growing the organisation through new governance models,” said Mr Graham. It is expected that a proposed new governance model will be chosen at the AGM and then presented to the full membership of GIA to vote on before the end of June. The rest of the AGM will be devoted to planning the next Forum which in 2010 will be held in Melbourne from 27-29 November. “The youth of the Italo-Australian community is diverse and vivacious, we are lucky that so many of us have been able to make it to Canberra to plan the future direction of GIA and the Italian-Australian youth community,” said Mr Graham.
