Adriano brilliantly finished on his left foot from the edge of the 18 yard area in the 48th minute to open Brazil's account. With Australia pushing up for an equalizer, Brazil countered in the dying minutes, with Fred scoring from a rebound shot from Robinho in the 89th minute. Australia had their chances though, with Sterjovski, Kewell, Bresciano and Grella all narrowly missing from outside the 18 yard area. Harry Kewell missed an open goal midway through the second half, and Marco Bresciano dribbled into the area on the counter attack with only Brazil keeper Dida to beat from a tight angle but Brazil's defence covered just in time to stop the shot. After an impressive first 40 minutes by the Socceroos, defender Tony Popovic was forced off the field with a recurring calf injury, being replaced by Marco Bresciano, who made an immediate impact, narrowly shooting over the bar just before the break. Ronaldinho was kept quiet by Australia's resilliant defence, and Ronaldo continued his below par performances, although suppliying fellow striker Adriano with the pass from which Brazil scored their first goal. Australia come away from the match with their heads held high, having created many chances in which the Brazilian defence had much trouble dealing with, and can look forward to group deciding clash with Croatia later this week. Australia simply require a draw to progress to the round of 16.
