Socceroos lose to Kuwait Print E-mail
Friday, 06 March 2009
A below-par Australia suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Kuwait and the poor performance left an enthusiastic crowd of 20,000 fans bitterly disappointed.
The Socceroos may have been fielding an all A-League eleven in their second game of the group but noone really predicted a home defeat at the hands of the Kuwait team.
Mesaed Al Enzi scored for Kuwait eight minutes before the break to score a 1-0 win over Australia in their 2011 Asian Cup qualifier in Canberra.

The defeat puts Australia in last place in the group following a goalless draw in Indonesia last month.

Both teams had chances to score in the Australia capital before the deadlock was broken after 37 minutes. With the Socceroo backline caught napping from a free-kick, defender Al Enzi headed home to gain the vital 3 points for his team. Socceroos created little on a frustrating night. Archie Thompson, Matt Simon and Tom Pondlejak had chances to equalize but it wasn’t to be. The win puts Kuwait second with three points after two games, a point behind leaders Oman. Indonesia are second with two points, one ahead of Australia.
