Jurgen Klinsmann's World Cup dream was destroyed by two Italy goals at the end of extra-time as Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero struck to secure a place in the final with a 2-0 win.

Klinsmann's Germany team seemed to be an unstoppable force, heading for Sunday's (Monday morning AET) showpiece in Berlin but, with the semi-final less than two minutes away from a penalty shoot-out, Grosso fired Italy into the lead in the 119th minute.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany Italy, rarely able to show its class against a tireless and determined Australian side, inched through into the World Cup quarterfinals with a last- minute penalty goal.

Francesco Totti, Italy's savior on many past occasions but only a substitute in this game, blasted an unstoppable penalty into the top left corner to give Italy a 1-0 victory. Time expired before the ball could be put back into play.

Gianluigi Buffon, the Italian goalkeeper, who once again played a nearly perfect match, could not even bring himself to look, but Totti's concentration and execution were exemplary.

(PA Sport) A rampant Luca Toni scored twice to end Ukraine's dreams and take Italy into the World Cup semi-finals in their 3-0 victory.

Toni finally ended his goalscoring drought on German soil with two second-half goals to crush the hopes of an entire nation.

Gianluca Zambrotta had opened the scoring in the sixth minute before last season's top Serie A scorer stole the limelight.

Toni headed the Azzurri's second shortly before the hour mark before capping a wonderful evening for Marcello Lippi's men shortly after.

It seems that drama chases Italy all around the world. Italy beat Australia 1-Nil. Australia bow out of the Fifa World Cup and Italy live to fight another day. Forza Australia and Forza Italia!

Hundreds of thousands of Australians gathered in big cities to watch the Aus-Italia clash and Brisbane was no exception, thanks to 'Arrivederci Pizzeria', 'La Dolce Vita Caffe' (both of Park Road, Milton) and with the help of AusItalia.com's DJ David Ferrini.

10,000 to Park Road Milton - 17,000 to Federation Square - 20,000 to Lygon Street
"FORZA Italia" is emblazoned across the blue soccer scarf on display at the front of Lygon Street's Cafe Notturno.

But inside, things are not so one-sided. Perhaps there is a new term now - "FORZA AUSTRALIA".  

A dazzle of Australian green and gold is punctuated with flags bearing Italy's green, white and red colours, a clear indication that loyalties are divided in the heart of Melbourne's Italian district ahead of Tuesday morning's World Cup showdown.
