Fifa Rankings: Australia and Italy Soar! |

Australia has jumped nine spots to 33 on FIFA's world football rankings after the Socceroos' World Cup success. The rise means Australia is now the top ranked Asian nation on FIFA's list, with Japan, South Korea, Iran, and Saudi Arabia all plummeting down the list after disappointing World Cup campaigns. Australia began the tournament in Germany last month ranked 42nd, but earned its new position after claiming a place in the round of 16 ahead of more favoured group rivals Croatia and Japan. |

The Curse is broken.
There were 24 years between 1982 and 2006 in which Italy had not lifted a World or European cup. 24 years of 'Almost', of 'That Ref!' and '#^@#ing Del Piero!' I believe, like many other Italy supporters, that the curse that was haunting Italian luck at major tournaments has been vanquished! (Alyssa Milano to the rescue ;) |

World Cup: Italia squad given heroes' welcome |

Italy's World Cup-winning squad have paraded through Rome with their trophy, in front of thousands of fans. The victorious squad flew back from Germany on Monday, touching down at Pratica di Mare, just south of the capital, 15 minutes late at 1745 BST. President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Romano Prodi met the team at the Presidential Chigi Palace. The players then travelled by open-top bus to the Circus Maximus, where they showed off the World Cup trophy. |

BERLIN, July 9 (Reuters) - Italy won the World Cup for the fourth time on Sunday when they beat France 5-3 on penalties after the teams finished level at 1-1 in a dramatic final that saw French captain Zinedine Zidane sent off in extra time.
After David Trezeguet hit the bar with his spot kick the Italians kept their nerve to end their penalties curse with fullback Fabio Grosso converting the fifth and decisive kick. |
