10,000 to Park Road Milton - 17,000 to Federation Square - 20,000 to Lygon Street "FORZA Italia" is emblazoned across the blue soccer scarf on display at the front of Lygon Street's Cafe Notturno. But inside, things are not so one-sided. Perhaps there is a new term now - "FORZA AUSTRALIA". A dazzle of Australian green and gold is punctuated with flags bearing Italy's green, white and red colours, a clear indication that loyalties are divided in the heart of Melbourne's Italian district ahead of Tuesday morning's World Cup showdown. Police have estimated a total of 17,000 could watch the match at Federation Square and Birrarung Marr, with up to another 20,000 more glued to the big screens in Lygon Street. In Brisbane, La Dolce Vita Caffe and Arrivederci Pizzeria, Park Road Milton, have estimated a showing of up to 10,000 football fans and will be closing off Park Road to accomodate all with big screens, music and prizes. Organisers David (Arrivederci Pizzeria) and Joe (La Dolce Vita), both of Italian origin, will cater for the sea of Gold and Blue from Monday evening right through until late Tuesday morning. Two big screens will be brought in and set up on Park Road and will be showing the game, with both venues showing the game with plasma screens and video projectors.
An event not to be missed. For the Italian-Australians this will be somewhere to drown your sorrows, albeit in celebration, no matter what the outcome. P.S. Does anybody know who Tony Palumbo is supporting? ;) (thesundaymail.news.com.au/ausitalia.com) |
