Pura Cup Cricket: Tassies win, NSW and WA gets points Print E-mail
Sunday, 04 March 2007
Tasmania required only 12.3 overs on day four to complete an eight-wicket win against South Australia in the Pura Cup match at Adelaide Oval.

The Tigers resumed at 0-25 and lost the wickets of Michael Dighton (nine) and Tim Paine (27) on the way to their second-innings target of only 72.

AusItalia Michael Di Venuto was named man of the match for his 85-ball 78 in Tasmania's first innings and three slips catches.

Tasmania's fifth outright victory in nine matches this season has strengthened its chances of playing in the Pura Cup final from March 19-23 - and of even hosting it at Bellerive Oval.

Much depends on the results of the other Pura Cup matches that are finishing in Sydney and Melbourne today (Sunday).

Tasmania and New South Wales will clash in Hobart from next Thursday (March 8-11).

Queensland has just failed in its game effort to win its Pura Cup match against New South Wales at the SCG, falling ten runs short of the 365 required for victory.

The Bulls finished on 8-355, and while they salvaged a draw, and prevented New South Wales from getting anything else but first-innings points, they now must plan for 2007-08, having fallen out of contention for a spot in the final.

Chris Hartley (31no) tried hard to get his side home, but MacGill's fifth scalp, Ashley Noffke for five, meant the Blues would survive.

Defiant knocks from the usually cavalier Adam Crosthwaite and the Victorian tail have saved the Bushrangers from outright defeat after Western Australia's underrated attack cut a swathe through their top order in the Pura Cup match at the MCG on Sunday.

Set 346 for victory after the Warriors declared during the first hour, Victoria suffered a disastrous start but its tail survived the final 30 overs of the game to reach 9-182, denying the Warriors the six points and leaving both sides' Pura Cup fate in the hands of its rivals.

Debutant Peter Siddle, who batted for 76 minutes, and third-gamer Darren Pattinson averted defeat by surviving the final eight balls of the match against the second new ball after Crosthwaite was trapped in front by Steve Magoffin in the second last over.
