Pura Cup Cricket: Tasmania win first ever Pura Cup Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 March 2007

Tasmania has clinched its first Pura Cup by crushing New South Wales by 421 runs soon after lunch on day five of a surprisingly one-sided final at Bellerive Oval.

The Tigers' pace trio of Ben Hilfenhaus (4-22), Adam Griffith (1-62) and Damien Wright (5-13) demolished the Blues' second innings for only 149 inside 35 overs, triggering jubilant and emotional scenes among the Tasmanian players and the crowd as the celebrations formally started for the state's first triumph in its 25 seasons as a full member of the Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup competition.

Griffith nailed Phil Jaques (five) lbw with the third ball of the day and Hilfenhaus grabbed 4-10 in six overs to dispose of Ed Cowan (seven), Grant Lambert (18), Dominic Thornely (0) and Simon Katich (34).

Wright bagged the last five wickets, bowling Daniel Smith (seven), having Nathan Hauritz (0) and Ben Rohrer (30) caught by wicketkeeper Sean Clingeleffer and pinning Matthew Nicholson (28) and Doug Bollinger (12) lbw.

Cowan edged onto his stumps, Lambert was caught by Dan Marsh low at first slip, Thornely also played on and Katich pulled a short ball to Tim Paine at backward square leg.

The ball after Katich's dismissal, the Blues would have been 7-94 off 23.1 overs but Michael Di Venuto, diving to his right from second slip, dropped a sharp chance given by Rohrer, then 19, off player-of-the-final Luke Butterworth.

In warm, cloudy conditions, with late-afternoon rain forecast, NSW had resumed at 0-3, with Jaques on three and Lambert still to score. There had been time for only one over - from Hilfenhaus - at the end of day four after Tasmania had been dismissed for 460 in its second innings.

Left-hander Jaques finished the Pura Cup season with 987 runs at an average of 47 from 21 innings in 11 matches. Only Western Australian left-hand opening batsman Chris Rogers scored more - 1202 (av. 70.7) in 10 matches.

Hilfenhaus's four wickets gave him seven for the match and took his season's tally to 60 (av. 25.38) off 509.1 overs in 11 matches. Queensland's Andy Bichel, with 45 (av. 24.66) off 320.3 overs in nine matches, was second to Hilfenhaus on the Pura Cup list.
