Cricket: Tasmania win domestic one-day cricket title Print E-mail
Monday, 25 February 2008

Michael Di Venuto - Tasmanian cricketing great - AusItalian Man-of-the-moment Ben Hilfenhaus on Sunday predicted a dynasty for Tasmanian cricket following the Tigers' nerve-wracking victory in the domestic one-day final.

Tasmania pulled off a thrilling one-wicket win over Victoria under the Duckworth-Lewis system in Saturday's rain-affected match at Bellerive Oval.

The Tigers were 9-128 - still two runs short of victory - when a nervous Hilfenhaus strode to the crease to face leg spinner Bryce McGain late on a cold and windy day in Hobart.

The tailender survived two balls before a Travis Birt (37 not out) glide to third man secured the winning runs in the final over.

"I was very nervous ... I was s******* myself actually," said a relieved Hilfenhaus, a batting bunny with a 7.8 average.

"Sometimes I have brain explosions when I'm batting.

"All I had to do was keep the ball out and let Travis hit the winning runs.

"It all went to plan so that was good."

Hilfenhaus had earlier done his job with the ball, taking 3-32 off nine overs as he and man-of-the-match Brett Geeves (3-28) ripped through Victoria's top order.

The Tigers are starting to clear space in the trophy cabinet after claiming the Pura Cup last year and the ING Cup in 2004-05.

Hilfenhaus, 24, believes it's just the beginning in a new era of riches for the Apple Isle.

Asked whether the Tigers could be a powerhouse for the next few years, Hilfenhaus told AAP on Sunday: "Definitely.

"I think we're always improving and striving for excellence.

"We're definitely pushing to make finals in all three forms of the game.

"The Tigers are such a young group.

"Winning the Pura Cup last year and the Ford Ranger Cup this year, we're definitely moving on to bigger and better things as a team."

The Tigers continued celebrating their nail-biting victory Sunday while the Bushrangers will focus on trying to win the Pura Cup after already qualifying for next month's final.

"We're keeping a lid on things knowing that we've got another two Pura Cup games before the end of the season," said Hilfenhaus, who has played a solitary one-day international for Australia.

"The celebrations can't get too much out of hand but we're definitely enjoying the win."

The Tigers will host NSW in a Pura Cup match at Bellerive Oval starting on Friday.
