Cricket: Little Master leads India over Australia Print E-mail
Monday, 03 March 2008

Sachin Tendulkar scored his first one-day ton in Australia as India claimed a crushing six wicket victory, their first at the SCG against Australia.

The second match of three-game series is on Tuesday in Brisbane and Australia face the prospect of losing the last two tri-series finals.

Tendulkar (117no from 120 balls) and 20-year-old Rohit Sharma (66) put on a 123-run fourth wicket stand as India reeled in their target of 240 with 25 balls to spare.

Tendulkar gently punched the air in bringing up three figures, his innings knocking the stuffing out of the home side.

In a summer full of nasty verbal barbs from both sides, the softly spoken right-hander's bat was more telling than any sledge.

He had some testing moments, on 98 a Brett Lee beam ball crashed into his shoulder but he managed his concentration to pilot his side to victory.

Harbhajan earlier put up his fists to play fight with Yuvraj Singh in a mock gesture in the field after capturing Hayden's (82) wicket during Australia's innings of 8-239 from 50 overs.

The powerful opener challenged young Indian quick Ishant Sharma to a bout last week and also labelled Harbhajan a "little obnoxious weed".

Hayden was reprimanded by Cricket Australia for his denigrating comments but that public scalding wouldn't have compared to the annoyance at falling to the off-spinner in sight of a century.

Harbhajan (2-38 off 10 overs) once again proved a thorn in Australia's side - dismissing the two men he has butted heads with the most this summer in Hayden and Andrew Symonds (31).

His celebrations were theatrical even by his own standards, starting with Symonds holing out at deep midwicket.

Dust flew up as the allrounder kicked the ground at his dismissal and just 11 runs later Harbhajan's joy was doubled as Hayden top-edged a sweep shot to Piyush Chawla.

Both sides had seemingly been on their best

behaviour following a summer of discontent but an exuberant Harbhajan couldn't help but stir the pot.

As the side gathered to celebrate Hayden's demise, Harbhajan and Yuvraj mockingly put up his fists and danced around with Yuvraj.

Hayden and Symonds had rescued the innings from 3-24, putting on a run a ball century stand, before Mike Hussey (45) ensured Australia posted a 200-plus total with a typically measured knock.

Chasing 240 to win, the Indians sailed to 0-50 before slipping to 2-56 courtesy of a spectacular diving catch from Mike Hussey to remove Robin Uthappa and a James Hopes direct hit that dismissed Gautam Gambhir.

Yuvraj Singh (10) continued his miserable summer by being bowled by Brad Hogg before Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma's century stand turned the match India's way.

Fellow Mumbai batsmen Sharma was bowled the delivery after Tendulkar brought up his hundred but his lapse came too late for the home side.
