Cricket: Di Venuto inspires Tasmania in Adelaide Print E-mail
Friday, 02 March 2007
Tasmania has boosted its chances of qualifying for the Pura Cup final, and even hosting it, by routing South Australia for only 139 and responding with 2-149 on day one at Adelaide Oval with Ausitalian Michael Di Venuto scoring 78 runs.

The bottom-of-the-table Redbacks were cruising at 1-86 in the 28th over nearing lunch but then lost 9-53 in 29 overs in an inexcusable collapse that ended 17 minutes before tea.

The Tigers' five bowlers all joined in the destruction - Ben Hilfenhaus (1-43), Brendan Drew (2-43), Luke Butterworth (4-39), Michael Dighton (1-5 off four overs) and off-spinner Jason Krejza (2-8 off six).

Dighton (34 not out) and Travis Birt (nine not out) ensured Tasmania of first-innings points in the 36th of its 39 overs after Tim Paine (26) was lbw to off-spinner Dan Cullen in the 20th and Michael Di Venuto, who cracked a six and nine fours in a dominant 85-ball 78, was thrown out by Cullen Bailey after advancing well down the pitch to the leg-spinner in the 33rd.

SA captain Darren Lehmann chose to bat first in fine, hot conditions on a pitch that had an even covering of grass and played truly.

Daniel Harris (25) was caught by wicketkeeper Sean Clingeleffer after gloving a defensive push at a Hilfenhaus lifter in the 14th over.

Jason Borgas (27) and top-scorer Lehmann (34) were dismissed just before lunch and Mark Cosgrove (one) and Nathan Adcock (two) departed soon after the break.

Borgas was caught bat-pad at forward short leg by Paine in Krejza's first over and Lehmann was taken in the gully by Butterworth in medium-pacer Dighton's third over.

Cosgrove was lbw shouldering arms to Drew, who then had Adcock caught at second slip by Di Venuto.

Di Venuto, still at second slip, took an even better catch - low and in his right hand - to remove Shane Deitz (nine) off Butterworth, Krejza pinned Callum Ferguson (29) lbw and Butterworth bagged the last three wickets, having Jason Gillespie (one) caught at first slip by Krejza and then bowling Cullen (four) and Paul Rofe (0) with successive balls.
