Brett Lee has been ruled out of the World Cup after his injured ankle was shown to be more serious than first expected.
In a huge blow to Australia's bid for a third successive World Cup title, the paceman's injury has shown no signs of improvement since returning from New Zealand and doctors have told Lee not to resume bowling for two to three months.
Selectors have rushed back Stuart Clark, who was originally left out of the 15-man squad, back into the one-day side and subsequent to ICC approval, the NSW fast bowler will be Lee's replacement.
Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Lee's injury was a huge disappointment for the team but remained confident that there would be enough depth to cover his absence.
"It is a great disappointment for Brett Lee that he is unable to take place in the World Cup and is a significant blow for the planning and preparation in place for the tournament. However it does give a tremendous opportunity for Stuart Clark to join the 15-man squad," Hilditch said in a statement on Friday.
"Stuart was extremely unlucky to miss out on initial selection and despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his inclusion we strongly believe that Stuart is primed to seize his opportunity."
"Though Brett’s injury is disappointing from a personal and team perspective, we strongly believe we are taking a squad of players more than capable of winning a third successive Cricket World Cup."
Lee damaged ligaments in his left ankle during a training mishap prior to the commencement of the Chappell-Hadlee one-day series in New Zealand.
Australia will head to the Caribbean with all-rounder Andrew Symonds (bicep) and Matthew Hayden (broken toe) still under injury clouds ahead of the team's first match against Scotland on March 14. Sportal
