Cricket: Blues thrash Bulls in Queensland Print E-mail
Tuesday, 18 December 2007
Queensland's domestic cricket dynasty is officially over after the Bulls fell to a fourth straight Pura Cup hiding at the hands of a ruthless NSW.

The dominant outfit of the past 12 years are now in the their equal worst losing streak in 55 seasons and out of title contention after capitulating meekly chasing 412 at the Gabba.

The Blues jumped straight back to the top of the Pura Cup table by routing Queensland for 151 to secure a 260-run win to join Victoria on 26 points, six clear of Western Australia.

The Gabba, the Bulls' biggest friend as the talent-rich state won the first of six Shield/Cup titles in 1995, has now turned enemy for their troubled batsmen.

For the third straight match in Brisbane, the home side, a one-man band with only all-rounder Ashley Noffke starring, failed to put up a second innings fight and handed NSW an early Christmas present.

The woefully inadequate final-day effort follows dire innings of 77 (Victoria) and 137 (South Australia) at the Gabba.

"It's been a bit of deja vu I guess," said skipper Jimmy Maher.

"Things have snowballed in the last few games.

"I don't think we've lost any skill but as a group we've lost a bit of confidence."

Maher, whose wicket started the rot when he shouldered arms to Doug Bollinger in the second over, epitomises the Bulls' fall from grace.

The state's second highest run-scorer and serial century maker when Queensland made nine straight finals until missing out by two points last season, is averaging just 23.

But the 33-year-old has no thoughts of stepping aside to usher in a new guard now the Bulls sit last with four points from six games.

"I'm not going to abandon ship when things are tough," Maher said.

"At the end of the day, rightly or wrongly, apart from Noffke, no one in the side has performed up to their capabilities.

"Let's face it, for 12 years we've been a dominating side and I certainly don't believe that we're going to lose all that on the back of four bad games."

In stark contrast, tough-talking Blues skipper Simon Katich praised the efforts of a host of NSW contributors.

"We felt we deserved to be on top going into Christmas, it's a nice position to be in with four games to go and three at home," he said.

Lanky quick Matthew Nicholson took man-of-the-match honours for his momentum-swinging first-innings 80 with the bat and match figures of 5-71 but the award could have easily gone to Katich himself (86 & 54) or the destructive Bollinger.

The competition's leading wicket-taker grabbed 7-80 in the match, including 3-25 on Monday, to move his season tally to 34 at 14.44 from five games.

Maher rated the bald left-armer a Test bowler in the making but both Bollinger and all-rounder Noffke (31 at 20) have their paths blocked.

Katich found it hard to separate the pair, behind Shaun Tait as the next cab off the rank.

"They're neck and neck at the moment but anything can happen in this game," he said.

"You don't want to see anyone go down injured but those guys are putting their hand up and will do well if they got a chance."
