Cricket: Australia's Watson and Haddin get Tons Print E-mail
Wednesday, 12 July 2006
Pakistan A has started its first innings well in the Top End Series match against Australia A in Darwin after the home side piled on a massive total of 6-510 - which included centuries to Brad Haddin and Shane Watson - before declaring on the second day.

Mohammed Hafeez and Rafatullah Mohmand got Pakistan A off to a sound beginning following the declaration by Australia A, as the openers put on 71 before paceman Mitchell Johnson claimed the first scalp in the 21st over.

Mohmand fell to the lanky Queenslander for 39 after offering a chance to keeper Haddin, but Pakistan A recovered quickly, with Hafeez (86 not out) clubbing 12 fours and a six and Shahid Yousuf (30) undefeated at stumps as the visitors reached 1-165.

Earlier, with Haddin and Watson resuming on 68 and 72 respectively, Australia A looked to build an imposing total from its overnight score of 5-307.

And the pair took to the Pakistan A bowling attack in the first session and would eventually put on 268 runs for the sixth wicket.

World Cup hopeful Haddin made 129 before succumbing to the bowling of Abdur Rehman, while Watson cracked 16 fours and a six in his undefeated innings of 161.

Johnson (51 off 58 balls) then delighted the Northern Territorian crowd as he racked up three sixes en route to an entertaining half-century.

Rehman was the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan A, taking 3-145 from nearly 56 overs.

In State cricket news, Chris Hartley will emulate the feat of one if his heroes by captaining Queensland in the Top End Series.

The 24-year-old will be the first wicket-keeper to lead the Bulls since Australian legend Ian Healy, who led the side for 19 matches in 1992-93 prior to Stuart Law's appointment.
