Cricket: Australia begins World Cup in style Print E-mail
Thursday, 15 March 2007
A century from Ricky Ponting and three wickets to Glenn McGrath have helped Australia cruise to victory over Scotland by a massive 203 runs in its World Cup opener in Basseterre, St Kitts on Wednesday.

Chasing an imposing 334, the Scots were never in the hunt with the only highlight provided by wicketkeeper/batsman Colin Smith who hit a well-deserved half-century.

McGrath was the best of the Aussie bowlers snaring 3-14 from six overs while speedster Shaun Tait was expensive, his two wickets costing 45 runs from just eight overs.

Earlier, the Aussies got off a lightning start smashing 50 off 48 balls with Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden racing to 91 in the 17th over before Gilchrist was out trapped lbw by Doug Brown for 46 off 55 balls.

The pace was unremitting, however, and it posted the 100 in the 20th over.

Hayden also fell lbw, to off-spinner Majid Haq for 60 off 73 balls when the score was 139 in the 27th over.

That left the way clear for Ricky Ponting to take charge and dominate a 54-run stand for the third wicket with Michael Clarke who contributed only 15 runs.

Brad Hodge scored 29 and by the time Ponting was dismissed in the 46th over he had seen the score to 274, his own total standing at 113 off 93 balls, including nine fours and five sixes.

Shane Watson (18no) and Brad Hogg (40no off only 15 balls) then added 58 runs from just 29 balls, with Brown copping the most punishment as his nine overs cost 86 runs, while Haq finished with 2-49 from seven overs.
