Cricket: Advantage South Australia and Tasmania in Pura Cup Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 January 2008
Italian Australian cricketer Luke Ronchi in action for Western Australia - AusItalia.comA fighting half century by wicketkeeper Tim Paine has helped push Tasmania past 450 in their Pura Cup cricket clash against Queensland in Hobart. Meanwhile AusItalian Luke Ronchi was selected for the Prime Minister's XI to face Sri Lanka.

The Tigers have been bowled out for 454 in their first innings just after lunch on day two with Paine unbeaten on 65 - his second 50 in as many games since being recalled.

It capped a gutsy comeback by Tasmania which were reduced to 2-0 and 3-39 on Monday.

Paine blunted an Ashley Noffke-inspired Queensland fightback early on day two of their bottom of the table clash after Tasmania resumed at 5-333.

Noffke was the pick of the bowlers with 5-79 - his sixth haul of five scalps for the summer.

A family medical issue which forced star batsman Brad Hodge from the crease compounded a poor start for Victoria on day two against South Australia at the Junction Oval.

In reply to SA's first innings total of 320, the Bushrangers were 4-82 at lunch, with captain Cameron White on 28 and all-rounder Andrew McDonald on 12.

Victoria resumed at 2-9, with Hodge four not out overnight and opener Nick Jewell on three.

But Hodge did not resume batting, retiring hurt so that he could attend hospital to be with his wife during scheduled heart surgery.

He was expected to be available to bat at some stage later on Tuesday.

Jewell (five) fell in the fourth over of the day, caught behind from the bowling of former Test paceman Jason Gillespie.

David Hussey and White, who struggled early in his innings, added 38 for the fourth wicket, before Hussey (27) was clean bowled by seamer Paul Rofe.

It left White and McDonald with plenty of work to do, with only wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade and bowlers Shane Harwood, Bryce McGain and Allan Wise to come, along with Hodge's possible return.
