A-League: Wellington and Newcastle moving up Print E-mail
Sunday, 16 September 2007
Newcastle United Jets vs Adelaid United - A-League on AusItalia.comNewcastle Jets has defeated Adelaide United 1-0 while Sydney FC slumped to last on the table after a 2-1 home loss to Wellington.

Newcastle Jets has defeated Adelaide United 1-0 at EnergyAustralia Stadium in Mario Jardel's debut match for the home side.

The Brazilian ace played the final 20 minutes and showed glimpses of his ability to excite the 13,627 fans but it was Olyroos forward Mark Bridge that won the game for the Jets.

His 81st minute goal was the difference as both sides struggled to create many goalscoring chances.

Joel Griffiths found Bridge inside the box after a sweeping cross field move and he calmly cut in from the left before firing his shot past Reds keeper Robert Blajic at the near post.

The only other highlight was the A-League debut of Newcastle's marquee signing Jardel.

Despite playing three of their first four matches at home, Sydney have only managed two draws and two losses to start the 2007/08 campaign.

Culina was in no mood for excuses after the loss, saying the team simply wasn't good enough, and warned changes would be made to get Sydney's season back on course.

The biggest disappointment for Culina was Sydney surrendering their lead after making the perfect start with an Adam Casey goal in the sixth minute.

"At the end of the day, good teams don't allow those sort of things to happen," said Culina.   AAP
